Responsibilities
  • Provide skilled assistance in the application and removal of casts, splints, and bracing products for orthopedic patients, ensuring proper fit and patient comfort.
  • Serve as an advanced resource for the Inpatient, Emergency, and Surgical Departments within a medical center specializing in infants, children, and adolescents.
  • Perform patient intake duties, including obtaining vital signs, confirming patient information, documenting medical histories, and preparing exam rooms.
  • Optimize patient flow, enhance staff efficiency, and contribute to best-practice development for orthopedic treatment and patient experience.
  • Provide expert instruction and supervision to Pediatric and Orthopedic house staff on the safe and effective application of orthopedic appliances through direct patient care and structured training sessions.
  • Deliver orthopedic care during emergency room visits and designated clinical coverage times, demonstrating advanced clinical judgment and efficiency.
  • Assist with complex casting in the operating room setting.
  • Maintain strict sterile precautions during and after orthopedic surgical procedures.
  • Assist the Orthopedic team with in-house patients and collaborate to improve departmental workflows and patient outcomes.
  • Maintain the casting area, manage inventory, and resolve discrepancies in coordination with the Orthopedic Technologist Supervisor.
  • Accurately capture and record inventory charges through the Pyxis system.
  • Maintain clean and ready patient stations, identify and address potential safety hazards, and perform scheduled equipment safety checks.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and adhere to blood and body fluid precautions and institutional safety protocols.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, including JCAHO, HIPAA, and other accreditation standards.
  • Apply advanced problem-solving and conflict-resolution approaches in complex situations.
  • Identify opportunities based on customer feedback and evolving needs and work with the Supervisor to establish processes.
  • Support patient- and family-centered care through shared decision-making, education, and clear communication.

University of Cincinnati co-hosts inaugural Ultra-SLP Conference on ultrasound biofeedback therapy. Researchers at the University of Cincinnati have advanced ultrasound technology in clinical speech-language pathology for nearly three decades, and the university increased its commitment to the field by co-hosting the inaugural Ultra-SLP Conference: Evidence and Practice in Ultrasound Biofeedback Therapy with Cincinnati Children's Hospital in July. The event, held from July 15-17 at UC's 1819 Innovation Hub, brought together more than 100 clinicians and researchers from across the country to discuss ultrasound biofeedback therapy for speech sound and swallowing disorders. Ultrasound biofeedback therapy uses an ultrasound probe placed under a person's chin to visualize tongue movement in real time. This technology is used by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to help children learn specific sounds or treat conditions such as dysarthria and dysphagia. Sarah Hamilton Dugan, PhD, an SLP at Cincinnati Children's and adjunct instructor within UC's Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, said, "Before ultrasound, it was really difficult to see all the critical articulatory movement that happens inside the mouth. Ultrasound is a safe, accessible and low-risk technology that provides speech-language pathologists a picture of what's happening inside the mouth to help guide clinical intervention." The conference included presentations by more than 20 clinicians, educators, and researchers from institutions across several states. Topics covered historic milestones in ultrasound use for speech intervention, applications for children with cleft palate, as well as practical methods for funding equipment. Approximately two-thirds of attendees were new to using ultrasound clinically; about 50 participated in a pre-conference workshop focused on swallowing disorders. Suzanne Boyce, PhD - a distinguished translational research mentor - said about forming this event, "A lot of speech-language pathologists are just beginning to use ultrasound technology without really having a way to know how or feel like they're part of a community. We created this conference to bring together a community of clinicians and researchers from different backgrounds who could learn from each other." Bon-Hi Moon - a Canadian SLP who attended thanks to a travel scholarship - said she appreciated learning about both dysphagia- and speech-related uses for ultrasound: "I attended all three days, and I really appreciated the breadth of topics that were presented... I enjoyed meeting others who are very well experienced and observing how supportive this group was of those of us who were brand new to this area." As adoption grows due partly to lower equipment costs and portable devices becoming available, leaders like Boyce have promoted wider use through research partnerships with clinics such as UC's Speech & Hearing Clinic - the world's largest clinic using this method - and training programs with hospital staff. Dugan said collaboration remains central: "Research works best when clinicians are involved... And the best way for researchers to understand all the different aspects that impact treatment success is through intentionally partnering with clinicians..." She added that building lasting partnerships between researchers and practitioners will lead toward stronger evidence-based clinical practices.

BioOra and Cincinnati Children's partner to advance CAR-T therapy with markedly reduced neurotoxicity for paediatric leukaemia

BioOra and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center have partnered to advance Atla-cel, a third-generation CAR-T therapy, for children with relapsed or refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The collaboration builds on adult clinical data showing markedly reduced neurotoxicity compared to earlier CAR-T therapies. Atla-cel demonstrated low rates of immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome in the Phase 1 ENABLE-1 adult study, positioning it as a compelling candidate for paediatric use where neurotoxicity poses heightened developmental risks. The reduced toxicity could enable outpatient delivery, eliminating prolonged hospital stays. Cincinnati Children's will lead a global clinical programme enrolling patients across the United States, New Zealand and potentially Australia. Dr Stella Davies will serve as principal investigator. As part of the partnership, Cincinnati Children's CEO Steve Davis joins BioOra's board.

Life-saving cancer treatment facility to create 1100 jobs. A new manufacturing facility in the city will deliver CAR-T cell immunotherapy, which uses a patient's own immune cells to identify and attack cancer cells. PHOTO: LONZA AG Pioneering cancer treatment company BioOra will offer a life-saving cancer therapy when its new immunotherapy manufacturing facility opens in October. The high-tech facility at Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct on Oxford Tce will increase development of CAR-T cell immunotherapy, a cancer treatment that uses a patient's own immune cells. Economic development agency ChristchurchNZ estimated the base will generate about $98 million to the economy from treating about 500 patients each year. This came a step closer at a site blessing attended by clinicians, international experts, investors, industry representatives and civic leaders. BioOra chief executive John Robson said Christchurch stood out in the site selection process because of its hospital, health precinct and other facilities. He said the goal was to bring potentially curable treatments to patients who had at this stage limited or no other options. "What we're developing has real curative potential, particularly for cancers like lymphoma. "This is about bringing a level of treatment to New Zealand that has, until now, largely only been available overseas." Ministry of Health chief science advisor Ian Town said the city was playing an important role in advanced cancer therapies. "Christchurch is positioning itself as a leading centre for cancer research and treatment. Having international experts here today reinforces that reputation. These innovative therapies are the future of cancer care in New Zealand." Robson said ChristchurchNZ helped connect BioOra to the right people, talent and infrastructure. ChristchurchNZ chief executive Ali Adams said BioOra's decision to move into Oxford Tce shows the city is attracting world-class health innovations that can be scaled up and succeed. "This facility represents confidence in Christchurch's ability to support science that genuinely changes lives," she said. BioOra will develop clinical trials and carry out therapies seldom available globally at the facility, and partner with Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, which is a global leader in paediatric CAR-T therapy. The United States' hospital's bone marrow transplantation and immune deficiency division director, Dr Stella Davies, said the therapies are "genuinely" revolutionary. "CAR-T can work much more rapidly, with early remission occurring in as little as 28 days - a dramatically improved experience for patients and their families." BioOra is a private joint venture between the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research and Bridgewest Ventures NZ LP. Malaghan trust board member David Downs went overseas for CAR-T therapy eight years ago, and said watching the facility become a reality in New Zealand was emotional. Once operational, it is expected to support about 1100 jobs in healthcare, manufacturing, tourism and other services, including more than 480 direct roles. The BioOra facility is expected to open on October 7.

GBBN wins Healthcare Environment Award. At the new Cincinnati Children's William K. Schubert M.D. Mental Health Center, a 97% reduction in restraint and seclusion hours isn't just a statistic - it's proof that when design supports an innovative care plan, it positively impacts lives. GBBN is honored that the Center for Health Design recognized this project with a 2026 Healthcare Environment Award. The growing pediatric mental health care crisis in America increases the need for spaces that destigmatize and demystify treatment. The William K. Schubert M.D. Mental Health Center fills a critical gap by expanding access to care through a building that sends a potent message: Help, hope, and health are within reach. The largest pediatric inpatient behavioral hospital in the U.S., this facility used salutogenic and evidence-based strategies to develop an advanced care model embodied in the landscape, architecture and interior design. GBBN Architects collaborated with Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center to re-think the collection of therapeutic settings known as milieu. These are the spaces where patients spend most of their time, participating in group therapy, guided activities, free choice time, and other therapies. The building's design was influenced by the location and variety of milieu spaces on the units within the building and their role as shared resources and destinations. Also integral to the design was the childhood act of building a blanket fort - an intuitive gesture of creating shelter, imagination and control. Gentle curves, layered transparency and organic shapes give the building a sense of security and softness. Natural wood, textured surfaces and color-shifting dichroic glass fins evoke playfulness and discovery, making the building feel both new and familiar. That softness extends inside. A light-filled lobby with an oculus conveys hope; cozy nooks built into the walls offer prospect and refuge; interior columns invite touch; clear sightlines to the Family Resource Center and café help visitors orient quickly, bringing a sense of calm. At night, the building glows from within - lantern-like, a beacon in the landscape, like light peeking through a blanket fort. GBBN Architects partnered with researchers at Clemson University for the Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) of this new facility. The POE was the inaugural project helping to structure Cincinnati Children's behavioral health toolkit. "This project includes many features that are groundbreaking in behavioral health environments," explains Angela Mazzi, who was part of GBBN's project design team. "These innovations include private rooms, no nurse stations, and an unprecedented amount and variety of milieu space. The project also features greenspace for both play therapy and horticultural therapy." Jurors praised the project's clear design vision, innovative care model, and thoughtful organization of therapeutic spaces, noting strong research that continued through post-occupancy - and the warm, welcoming, child-friendly environment that gives patients flexibility in their care.
