Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) credential is required.
  • Meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services timeline.
  • Hold all appropriate state licensure, education, and training required for the position.
  • Successfully complete the organization dialysis training program and cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
  • Pass the Ishihara color blindness test, with reasonable accommodations considered if needed.
  • Perform frequent, prolonged periods of standing, bend over, lift and lower solutions up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 40 pounds occasionally, and assist with heavy lifting, moving, and ambulation of patients.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy as part of the dialysis health care team under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines and perform required pretreatment alarm testing.
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform vascular access cannulation, administer heparin when delegated or permitted by state law, and monitor vascular access pressures during treatment.
  • Obtain and document pre-treatment, intradialytic, and post-treatment vital signs, weights, treatment parameters, and patient evaluations.
  • Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling as prescribed.
  • Monitor patients' responses to dialysis therapy, evaluate intradialytic problems, perform prescribed interventions, and report significant changes to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Obtain hemostasis, apply appropriate dressings, and evaluate patients before discharge.
  • Enable required safety alarms, including Narrow Venous Limits 160, and conduct machine safety checks.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory tests, collect and prepare specimens, label and store samples, and coordinate laboratory courier collection.
  • Complete accurate and timely treatment documentation, including Hemodialysis Treatment Sheets, progress notes when applicable, clinical application entries, and patient chart paperwork.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness and ensure omitted entries are corrected by appropriate staff.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments, and immediately clean blood spills with appropriate disinfectant.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment and follow infection control policies and procedures.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities and infection control audits.
  • Reinforce infection control education for patients and families under the direction of the clinical manager or designee as allowed by state law.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care.
  • Reinforce education about dialysis care, treatment options, home dialysis products, and home dialysis benefits under the direction of the clinical manager or designee.
  • Set up and perform treatments on machines used in the transitional care unit, including demonstrating peritoneal dialysis setup.
  • Assist with coordinating patients' transitions to their selected dialysis modality.
  • Assist with supply ordering and inventory for the transitional care unit.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff on appropriate programs under the supervision of a nurse.
  • Travel between assigned facilities and various community locations, with possible travel to regional, business unit, and corporate meetings.
