  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing with an Associate in Nursing degree.
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is preferred or required within five years of the hire date.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a health field relating to school-age children and/or previous experience in school nursing is preferred.
  • Current licensure by the Indiana State Board of Nurses’ Registration and Nursing Education as an active Registered Nurse is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification and computer skills are required.
  • Area-specific required education must be obtained upon hire and maintained.
Responsibilities
  • Provide triage, treatment, or first aid for students who are ill or injured.
  • Interpret, implement, and document quality measures according to Indiana State Board of Health standards, and remain current with policy changes and standards of care.
  • Create Individualized Healthcare Plans when student health warrants.
  • Modify or remove health-related barriers to learning and facilitate the educational process.
  • Practice universal precautions, fall prevention, safe patient mobilization, proper body mechanics, and vital-sign assessment.
  • Administer medications safely, use two patient identifiers for procedures, and maintain accurate and complete records.
  • Maintain knowledge of current pharmacology.
  • Provide student and parent education and ensure mandated immunizations and testing are completed and documented annually.
  • Disseminate student-health information and training to school personnel with a legitimate educational interest, as permitted by regulation.
  • Implement established protocols approved by the medical director based on identified criteria.
  • Perform clinical procedures within the scope of the nursing license with a physician order or protocol.
  • Provide direction to assigned non-licensed and/or licensed practical nurses.
  • Support school nursing departments by floating to different schools or events for short-term or long-term needs.
  • Maintain competency by substituting on a routine basis.
  • Attend conferences, in-services, webinars, and seminars, and read journal articles related to school or public health.
  • Provide holistic, competent care to students of all age groups and diverse populations.
  • Foster relationships with future healthcare students and education programs.
