Requirements
  • A BA/BS degree in Biology, Chemistry, Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science, or another related science is required.
  • Completion of pre-licensure training in a California State Department of Public Health accredited training program is required.
  • At least three years of general laboratory experience in a hospital or acute care setting, or three continuous years with Marin General Hospital, is required.
  • A California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license is required at hire.
  • Integrative Agitation Management is required within 30 days of hire.
  • The ability to work in mutually accountable teams is required.
  • The ability to collaborate with team members, hospital staff, patients, and physicians is required.
  • The ability and willingness to be trained in more than one laboratory discipline is required.
  • The ability to organize multiple tasks using time management and attention to detail is required.
  • Basic computer knowledge and the ability to perform data entry and information retrieval are required.
  • Knowledge of blood and body fluid precautions is required.
  • Verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • The ability to read, speak, write, understand, and follow English verbal and written instructions is required.
  • Technical proficiency is required.
  • The ability to delegate and direct others in laboratory procedures is required.
  • A willingness to further laboratory science knowledge and accept additional responsibilities such as staff development, training, in-service education, internships, new technology evaluation, test validation, teaching, and serving as a resource person is required.
  • The employee must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care or service for patients from infancy through late adulthood.
  • Compliance with patient privacy and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act requirements is required.
  • Required immunizations include measles, mumps, varicella, and annual influenza immunizations, subject to applicable exemptions.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure that duties for the assigned shift or work area are completed and adjust workload with other staff as necessary.
  • Maintain current knowledge of hospital and department policies, procedures, and applicable work parameters.
  • Follow all appropriate blood and body fluid precautions.
  • Comply with the laboratory quality control program.
  • Maintain records.
  • Follow turnaround-time policies.
  • Use a computer for data entry and information retrieval.
  • Handle and process laboratory specimens.
  • Perform test procedures specific to the assigned section.
  • Check test results for validity.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and assess the accuracy and reproducibility of instrumentation.
  • Keep equipment and the work area clean and safe for use.
  • Participate in competency testing and training.
  • Participate in Proficiency Testing through CAP surveys.
  • Keep adequate supplies stocked in the work area.
  • Operate the assigned work area.
  • Direct and instruct others in laboratory procedures.
  • Perform routine care and maintenance of equipment in the assigned work area or program, including safety and point-of-care functions.
  • Participate in quality control, proficiency testing, competency testing, and training programs.
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, and revising procedures for testing and instrumentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Basic Life Support certification is preferred at hire.
