Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program with current board certification.
  • Hold an active state Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license and prescriptive authority.
  • Have a minimum of 2 years of experience in a surgical or hospital-based acute care setting; cardiothoracic surgery experience is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrate skill in intensive care unit management and invasive bedside procedures.
  • Have strong knowledge of anatomy, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and medical-surgical care.
  • Maintain excellent clinical judgment, teamwork, and communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • Provide care to critically ill patients in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit, including patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, Impella, intra-aortic balloon pump, and continuous renal replacement therapy.
  • Serve as first and second assistant in cardiothoracic surgical procedures.
  • Perform endoscopic vein harvesting using Terumo or Hemopro systems.
  • Perform endoscopic radial artery harvesting.
  • Perform bedside procedures including thoracentesis, central and arterial line placement, and chest tube insertion and removal.
  • Remove temporary pacing wires and perform other advanced interventions.
  • Manage preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative care, including consultations and discharge planning.
  • Conduct daily rounds, write progress notes, and lead care coordination efforts.
  • Collaborate with cardiothoracic surgeons, intensivists, anesthesiologists, and nursing teams.
  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments and physical examinations.
  • Order and interpret laboratory and imaging tests and develop or adjust treatment plans accordingly.
  • Prescribe medications and therapies based on current clinical guidelines.
  • Participate in the care of patients on inpatient consult services admitted under Surgery, Medicine, Trauma, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Support emergency and inpatient assessments, triage decisions, and follow-ups.
  • Educate patients and families about procedures, recovery expectations, and health management strategies.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and team leader during shifts.
  • Ensure accurate documentation, coding, and billing practices.
  • Maintain inventory of medical supplies, prepare patients for procedures, and ensure a safe and organized clinical environment.
  • Provide 24/7 in-house coverage of the Cardiac Surgery Service using 24-hour shifts, with flexibility for 8-, 10-, or 12-hour shifts based on clinical demand.
