Requirements
  • A PhD in regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, or a related scientific discipline with 0–3 years of relevant industry experience in a biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or scientific research and development environment, or a master's degree with more than 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience in vascular cell research, bioprinting, and vascular regeneration.
  • Proficiency in bioassays, flow cytometry, immunostaining, and confocal imaging.
  • A solid background in analyzing host immune and foreign body responses to implanted biomaterials.
  • Ability to learn, ask questions, solve difficult technical problems, assess whether solutions are realistic, maintain attention to detail, multitask, and prioritize competing deadlines.
Responsibilities
  • Design and execute complex in vitro and ex vivo vascularization studies to characterize vascular cell behavior, neovascularization, and therapeutic function in response to bioprinted tissues.
  • Conduct and optimize assays including two-dimensional and three-dimensional in vitro vascular formation, flow cytometry, imaging, immunostaining, multiplex cytokine analysis, vascular cell isolation and culture, and cytotoxicity assays.
  • Implement experimental strategies to generate and interpret high-quality data supporting the development of tissue therapeutics with optimized vascularization and long-term performance.
  • Analyze and interpret datasets, identify key findings, and work with computational biology and data science teams to extract meaningful conclusions.
  • Provide hands-on technical contributions to integrate vascularization insights into product design, including assessment of biomaterial formulations, cell selection, and delivery strategies.
  • Maintain detailed experimental records, including electronic lab notebooks, and contribute to standard operating procedures and study reports.
  • Present experimental findings, conclusions, and recommendations to cross-functional teams.
  • Support regulatory and intellectual-property deliverables by providing scientifically sound data packages.

Vancouver's Aspect Biosystems has secured over $500 million in total investment and entered a $2.6-billion partnership with Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk to develop cellular treatments for Type 1 diabetes. The company, founded in 2013 from University of British Columbia research, now employs 130 people. Aspect uses AI-assisted bioprinting technology to create living human tissue that can detect glucose levels and release insulin accordingly. The bioprinted cells are engineered to evade immune rejection once implanted. In April, the federal government announced a $280-million partnership to accelerate clinical development and strengthen biomanufacturing capacity. The British Columbia government had previously committed $23.8 million in 2024. The company is now focused on translating its bioprinting platform from laboratory production into clinical use.

Canadian government supports SFU VentureLabs Alumni, Aspect Biosystems with $79 Million in funding. On April 2nd, the Government of Canada announced an investment of $79 Million for SFU VentureLabs Alumni, Aspect Biosystems. This initiative was conducted through the Strategic Response Fund (SRF), a fund focused on supporting Canadian industries' innovation, adaptation and competition in an evolving global economy. The Province of British Columbia will also be supporting Aspect Biosystems with $23.8 million to expand the company. The national government is strengthening its partnership with Aspect Biosystems with an additional $280 million collaboration that supports the scaling of Aspect's clinical development, enhances their AI-platform and accelerates the commercialization process. This installation will create upwards of 400 jobs for employees and co-op students alike. Aspect Biosystems' CEO, Tamer Mohammed remains enthusiastic about this joint effort. Aspect Biosystems receives funding for cellular medicine project. The investment adds to the C$200m co-investment announced with Canada and British Columbia in 2024. Aspect Biosystems has secured a C$79m($56.6m) investment from the Government of Canada to support a C$280m multi-year project aimed at advancing its pipeline of bioengineered cellular medicines for endocrine and metabolic diseases. The project will enhance Aspect Biosystems' clinical development capabilities and bolster its integrated platform for developing and manufacturing advanced cellular medicines. The investment is in addition to the C$200m co-investment previously announced with the Government of Canada and Province of British Columbia in 2024. Aspect Biosystems focuses on developing therapies intended to restore or supplement biological functions and deliver functional cures for complex, hard-to-treat diseases. The pipeline leverages a platform that integrates proprietary AI-based bioprinting and hypoimmune cell engineering for creating immune-evasive cellular medicines. The partnership announcement took place at Aspect Biosystems' Vancouver headquarters with Canada Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Economic Development for Quebec Mélanie Joly in attendance. Aspect Biosystems gets $79M from feds for $280M 3D-printed tissue treatment project

Vancouver-based Aspect Biosystems has received $79 million from Canada's Strategic Response Fund to support a $280-million project developing 3D-printed human tissue treatments. The company will contribute the remaining $201 million. Founded in 2013 as a University of British Columbia spinout, Aspect bioprints tissue implants using living stem cells and hydrogel polymers to potentially repair organs like the pancreas in Type 1 diabetes patients. The funding will enhance clinical development capabilities and scale biomanufacturing for advanced cellular medicines. This follows previous government support, including $49 million federally and nearly $24 million from British Columbia in July 2024. Aspect raised $115 million USD in Series B funding in January 2025 and partners with Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk on tissue therapy development.
