We are looking for a Staff Machine Learning Engineer with tech lead experience to join our Growth Engineering team. This high impact team is specifically focused on building SEO products and a logged out platform for Pinterest’s Growth. One third of Pinterest MAUs visit via search traffic at least once in a given month. SEO also accounts for half of all new sign ups, making it the largest acquisition and visitation channel outside of direct visits. Our Acquisition org is one of Pinterest’s biggest growth levers, and we need someone to come in and influence the company’s user growth strategy.

Working closely with product managers, designers, and backend engineers, you will play an important role in enabling the newest technologies and experiences. We are now using GenAI to enhance the content we are able to surface in search engines, moving beyond clunky templates such as “37 best chicken recipe ideas for you” towards something that is more compelling to a user. You’ll have the opportunity to operate autonomously and find creative solutions to thought-provoking problems. Even better, because we covet the kind of courageous thinking that’s required in order for big bets and smart risks to pay off, you’ll be invited to create and drive new initiatives, seeing them from inception through to technical design, implementation, and release.

What you’ll do:

Own the vision and strategy of ML-based product solutions for Pinterest’s largest user acquisition channel: SEO. Work closely with design, product, and backend teams to find the gap in current ML practices and propose technical solutions to tackle engineering problems.
Work side-by-side with backend/fullstack product engineers, data scientists, and a sister frontend user experience team to drive growth via SEO traffic for Pinterest.
Leverage LLM/GenAI and other latest innovations to transform the content corpus we surface to search engine and help the team grow the scope of impact.
Contribute to and lead each step of the product development process, from ideation to implementation to release; from rapidly prototyping, running A/B tests, to architecting and building solutions that leverage large-scale data.
Grow as an engineer by working with world-class peers on varied and high-impact projects.
Mentor and guide more junior engineers, providing technical leadership and expertise.

What we’re looking for:

MS/PhD in Computer Science, ML, NLP, Statistics, Information Sciences or related fields
5+ years of industry experience in machine learning in industry and 1+ years of TL in use cases with large scale: content/user understanding, recommendation systems, information retrieval, or search.
Hands-on experience working with large scale ML modeling development and productization.
Effective collaborator working with cross functional partners and an excellent communicator.
Experience with Generative AI and LLM are a plus.
