OrganOx develops and commercializes organ perfusion technology to keep donor organs viable for transplantation. The flagship metra device perfuses livers with oxygenated blood at body temperature, delivering nutrients and drugs to mimic normal physiology and allow viability assessment for up to 24 hours. Unlike traditional cold storage, it maintains normothermic conditions and offers direct organ assessment and longer preservation; it leases devices to transplant centers and uses disposable sets. Its goal is to increase transplantable livers and expand to other organs and applications.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • NHS Blood and Transplant used OrganOx Metra in July 2026's ARC pilot.
  • May 2026 CEO Naoya Iwata signals Terumo is professionalizing OrganOx's operating model.
  • G&H|ITL's April 2026 dual-source manufacturing increases capacity and reduces supply-chain choke points.

What critics are saying

  • TransMedics and XVIVO are attacking transplant centers with multi-organ platforms and stronger salesforces.
  • OrganOx still depends on liver perfusion; kidney commercialization stays targeted for 2030.
  • If NHS ARC adoption or Terumo integration stalls, OrganOx becomes a niche post-exit asset.

What makes OrganOx unique

  • OrganOx metra remains the only FDA-approved liver NMP platform, plus air-transport approval.
  • By July 2026, metra supported over 6,000 liver transplants worldwide.
  • Terumo's October 2025 acquisition gives OrganOx global distribution, capital, and manufacturing reach.

Terumo announces US launch of safety syringe

Terumo announces US launch of safety syringe. The SafeR technology equips the SurTract Safety Syringe with a fully passive, automatic retraction mechanism. Terumo Medical has announced the launch of its SurTract Safety Syringe in the US, incorporating Roncadelle Operations' SafeR passive safety technology. The syringe will be distributed to clinics, emergency-care settings and hospitals across the country starting from the first quarter of this year. The SafeR technology equips the SurTract Safety Syringe with a fully passive, automatic retraction mechanism. This feature withdraws the needle into the plunger after use immediately, aiming to reduce needle-stick injury risks for healthcare professionals. The system also maintains standard clinical technique while enhancing safety and ease of use. The SurTract Safety Syringe also offers a needle selection that can be customised specifically for use with SurTract Syringes, enabling physicians to choose combinations best suited to patient needs. In addition, the syringe provides a blunt needle option, which helps prevent dullness and allows for needle replacement during aspiration. US tariffs are shifting - will you react or anticipate? Don't let policy changes catch you off guard. Stay proactive with real-time data and expert analysis. The design contributes to less medical waste by eliminating an external plastic safety sheath. Terumo vice-president Bob Klock said: "The SurTract Syringe combines Terumo's trusted clinical know-how with Roncadelle's validated SafeR technology to deliver a simple, effective solution for safer injections. It gives healthcare providers more - and better - treatment options for their patients, which is our ultimate goal." Roncadelle operations chief business development officer Dr Fred Metzmann said: "Terumo has significantly advanced injection safety with the integration of our SafeR technology. Together, we are delivering a next-generation syringe system that is intuitive, reliable, and engineered to protect healthcare professionals." The company's SafeR product line includes needle-guard systems and passive safety syringes designed for safe injection and protection in clinical environments. In October 2025, Terumo completed its previously announced acquisition of OrganOx for nearly $1.5bn after meeting all necessary regulatory and closing requirements.
