Spotify provides a digital music streaming platform that lets users listen to millions of songs and podcasts online. It runs a freemium business: a free, ad-supported tier and a premium, ad-free tier with perks like offline listening and higher audio quality. Users access content by streaming it over the internet, with the app recommending personalized playlists and radio based on listening habits. The company earns money from subscription fees from premium users and from advertisers targeting free-tier listeners. Spotify differentiates itself through its large library, user-friendly interface, and strong personalization features that tailor playlists and recommendations to each user. Its goal is to lead the global music streaming market by connecting listeners with a vast catalog and creators, while building sustainable revenue from both subscriptions and ads.

Spotify crosses 300M subscribers with 15% revenue growth in Q2 2026

Spotify reported Q2 2026 results, surpassing 300 million subscribers for the first time. The streaming company saw revenue grow 15% year-over-year on a constant currency basis, up from 14% in Q1. Gross margin reached a record 33.4%, whilst free cash flow continued to strengthen. The company exceeded its subscriber guidance and reported increased engagement, with the number of active days for global subscribers rising. Co-CEOs Alex Norström and Gustav Söderström, along with CFO Christian Luiga, presented the results. The executives highlighted that Q2 demonstrated "healthy broad-based growth" and referenced updates following the company's Investor Day in May. The earnings call allowed analysts and participants to submit questions through an online platform, with the company providing forward-looking statements subject to risks and uncertainties.

Spotify to label AI-generated artists and exclude them from recommendations

Spotify will label AI-generated artists with "AI Persona" badges and exclude their music from editorial and algorithmic recommendations, the company announced Tuesday. Starting mid-September, the badges will appear on artist profiles where the identity is AI-generated rather than representing a real person. Spotify will review profiles using pre-defined audience thresholds, prioritising more popular artists first. The badges will display on artist profiles, in search results, and across playlists. AI Persona music won't appear in personalised recommendations unless users explicitly follow those artists. Artists can appeal incorrect labels. Spotify clarified the badge addresses the artist's public identity, not how the music was made. Information about music creation will remain available through AI Credits and SongDNA features. The policy expands Spotify's AI guidelines, first announced September 2025, which ban unauthorised AI voice clones and deepfakes whilst permitting certain AI tools.

Spotify is testing a skip button that might let you skip podcast ads.

Spotify is testing a skip button that might let you skip podcast ads. The audio giant says the feature, which lets some users bypass non-Spotify ads, is still in early testing as publishers push back. on August 10, 2026 Spotify has rolled out a feature that lets some users skip past podcast ads not sold directly by the platform, per an exclusive report from Semafor. In the report, Spotify frames the change as a streamlined version of its existing skip button, but publishers say it could gut their ad revenue. According to Semafor, Podnews called the update a "significant threat" to ad-funded shows, while Crooked Media co-founder Tommy Vietor was more direct, writing on social media that it was "very cool" of Spotify to "try and destroy the podcast industry." Semafor reported that several major audio networks contacted Spotify directly after the announcement to raise concerns about their monetization. Privately, the company has argued that the feature actually helps publishers by keeping people listening longer overall, citing internal engagement data, while also stressing that the button is still in early testing and could be pulled back. You May Also Like Keep Watching Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 and Galaxy Watch 9 First Look: Better Battery, Better AI, Higher Price A Spotify spokesperson confirmed to Semafor that the rollout is limited to certain paid subscribers and only appears when the app is open in the foreground, describing it as part of routine product testing aimed at making podcast listening "more intuitive" for Premium users. The move lands as the podcast industry is already contending with a broader shift toward video platforms like YouTube, Semafor noted, and it isn't the first time Spotify has drawn pushback from publishers - the company partially reversed a podcast play-count rollout last year after similar complaints.
