Job Details:

The Institute for Geophysics at The University of Texas at Austin (UTIG) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to analyze polar geophysical datasets. UTIG is one of the three research units of the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin. Scientists and students at UTIG conduct expeditionary research in Earth Science in all parts of the world and are also involved in planetary missions and climate modeling. These research projects produce large data sets and require computational analysis and visualization.

PURPOSE

The candidate will be part of the Polar and Planetary Geophysics group at UTIG and develop new approaches for analyzing and synthesizing UTIG’s archive of aerogeophysical datasets, including airborne ice penetrating radar data. The candidate will validate in the Open Polar Radar effort (https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2127606) to make airborne radar data more accessible to the community. Particular tasks will be organizing data for ingest for inverse and machine learning approaches. The candidate may also engage in complementary seismic and other geophysical investigations. This position is for at least one year up to three years depending on performance and funding.

RESPONSIBILITIES

This individual will work on data collected by the ongoing ECSHER, K-NOW, COLDEX and ICECAP aerogeophysical projects.
Present results to the scientific community and broader public.
Publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
Publish relevant code and data in relevant repositories.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. in Geosciences or a related field at the time of appointment. Ph.D. must have been earned within the past three years.

PERFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with a wide variety of UNIX based computer languages. Experience with Bayesian approaches to data analysis.

SALARY RANGE

$65,000

WORKING CONDITIONS

May work around standard office conditions.
