Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering is required.
  • At least 8 years of demonstrated high-performance experience designing, analyzing, and implementing piping and/or process piping systems is required.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance and access to the AEDC local area network is required.
  • Current United States citizenship is required.
  • Extensive knowledge of piping and/or process piping system design principles, including fluid mechanics, heat transfer, stress analysis, materials selection, and piping component selection, is preferred.
  • Experience designing complex process systems involving pumps, valves, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and related equipment is preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards, including ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, and boiler and pressure vessel codes, is preferred.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard design software such as AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, Caesar II, Plant 3D, and Applied Flow Technology is preferred.
  • Experience with finite element analysis software is highly desirable.
  • Experience with high-temperature systems exceeding 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, cryogenics, flammable fluids, severe cyclic conditions, pipe stress analysis, pipe hanger selection, pipe supports, and process equipment selection and sizing is preferred.
  • A Professional Engineer license is preferred.
  • An active Department of Defense Secret clearance is preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Lead and execute all phases of process piping and piping system design from initial concept through final commissioning, ensuring compliance with requirements and industry best practices.
  • Generate feasible design concepts for piping systems based on operational needs and technical requirements.
  • Develop preliminary designs, including process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, equipment layouts, and material selections.
  • Refine preliminary designs by performing detailed calculations, selecting components, and creating detailed drawings and specifications.
  • Finalize designs based on reviews, analysis, and feedback, creating documentation for fabrication, installation, and testing.
  • Provide on-site support during installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting, and ensure accurate as-built drawings and documentation are created.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable industry codes and standards, including ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, and boiler and pressure vessel codes.
  • Conduct risk assessments throughout the design process, identify potential hazards, develop mitigation strategies, and present design decisions and analysis to peers, management, and Department of Defense clients.
  • Collaborate with design engineers, drafters, systems and reliability engineers, and plant and facility operations engineers.
  • Collaborate with fabrication and installation engineering teams and crafts personnel to ensure designs are practical, constructible, maintainable, and efficiently implemented in the field.
  • Mentor and guide junior and fellow senior engineering personnel and promote their professional growth.
  • Champion advanced technologies and design innovations, including visual and animated displays, to improve communication of design concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Contribute to migration from two-dimensional design practices to a digital enterprise environment, including three-dimensional design, building information modeling, and digital twins.
  • Support the transition of design information into modeling and simulation frameworks for operations, maintenance, reliability, and model-based systems engineering initiatives.
  • Wear company-issued personal protective equipment in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
