Overview

Reporting to the Power Plant Manager, the Plant Engineer will be responsible for assisting in the safe and efficient operation of the power plant, chiller plant, and distribution systems.  The Plant Engineer carries out all routine maintenance, inspections, and assists in monitoring operating systems, reporting plant status and suggesting corrective action plans accordingly.  The Plant Engineer follows industry standards and established procedures under limited supervision and must effectively communicate information to both plant management and plant personnel, regarding equipment condition and performance, and provide suggestions for plant improvements.  Provide day to day supervision of the maintenance workforce (employees and contractors) to insure the safe and reliable delivery of utilities for university facilities and other properties. This includes assisting in the coordination and execution of equipment, systems and services shutdowns to provide minimum impact to customers and reliability, while completing repairs in the most cost-effective manner possible.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

1. Experience with engineering principles and their application for the operation and maintenance of steam, chilled water equipment, electrical generation, boilers, chiller, gas turbines, and/or distribution systems.

2. Power plant specific or maritime engine room experience.

3. Engineer-in-training or professional engineer license.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Supervises the day-to-day custodial and/or maintenance operations of a unit, department, or school building within the University. 2. Participates in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for building maintenance and develops preventative maintenance schedules. 3. Conducts building inspections and coordinates repairs and maintenance to facility and physical plant. 4. Determines staff assignments, tool and equipment requirements, and procedures for projects and work requests. 5. Plans, estimates, coordinates, and follows-up on repairs, renovations, and trade projects. 6. Coordinates activities for service response with various trades; ensures timely delivery and completion of service work in assigned buildings and surrounding areas. 7. Develops detailed work plans and establishes daily assignment priorities and time schedules for staff. 8. Responsible for ensuring up to date maintenance programs and operating procedures are in place to meet all customer needs and regulatory requirements (e.g. building codes, OSHA etc). 9. Interacts with internal contacts to arrange for custodial or physical plan services and to discuss maintenance and renovation projects. 10. Interacts with outside contacts to discuss maintenance, renovation and construction plans to arrange for repairs or to obtain price quote information. 11. Manages a staff of non-exempt employees. 12. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree in a related field. Four years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
