Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Obtain and maintain certifications necessary to support students with special needs.
  • Complete pre-job training, ongoing training, meetings, and professional learning required for the role.

  • Be able to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 pounds and safely lift 50 pounds in a two-person lift; some assignments may require more depending on student needs.
  • Be able to physically restrain students when necessary and perform required standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, stair climbing, reaching, grasping, and keyboard use.
Responsibilities
  • Carry out instructional programs and lessons in learning environments designated in the lesson plan under teacher supervision.
  • Coordinate assignment completion with regular classroom teachers.
  • Assist individual students with activities instructed by a teacher and work with small groups to reinforce previously introduced material.
  • Monitor behavior contracts and reward systems for students.
  • Assist students with recitation, reading, curriculum tasks, and tutoring in various subject areas.
  • Maintain, order, and organize instructional-material inventory.
  • Collect data for assessment and monitoring purposes.
  • Complete daily paperwork, including attendance reports, detention slips, student referral slips, and student passes.
  • Assist with non-standardized testing of students.
  • Prepare, produce, and maintain materials and equipment as assigned.
  • Provide initial first aid and emergency care.
  • Work with students in one-to-one and group situations and help resolve disciplinary issues.
  • Remove disruptive or defiant children when required.
  • Supervise student loading and unloading from buses.
  • Provide individual tutoring in computer skills and usage.
  • Assist students in finding library materials and books.
  • Assist teachers in locating and assembling classroom materials.
  • Conduct story time for students.
  • Monitor students during recess, hall duty, and passing periods.
  • Supervise students using computer programs.
  • Provide personal assistance to students, including dispensing medication.
  • Assist assigned students with physical tasks such as dressing, moving between rooms, using the lavatory, and maneuvering and securing wheelchairs.
  • Perform tasks for students such as sharpening pencils and carrying lunch trays.
  • Accompany assigned students to the office or school nurse when necessary.
  • Serve as a resource person to the student personnel evaluation team concerning an assigned student.
  • Perform Nonviolent Crisis Intervention techniques when appropriate after training.
  • Accompany and assist students in the classroom setting.
  • Attend required meetings and conferences.
  • Laminate materials as needed.
  • Perform miscellaneous clerical duties and assist other staff members.
  • Work scheduled school hours and extended hours or days when directed.
  • Work primarily independently and with others in an indoor school environment, with occasional outdoor work.
