Merge Labs develops brain–computer interfaces to connect human brains with computers. Its product focus is high-bandwidth neural implants that read neural signals and transmit data to AI systems and software, enabling bidirectional communication between brain and machine. The implants are designed to work with advances in AI and neural sensing hardware, using a system of implants, interfaces, and software to interpret brain activity and control devices or software. Compared with competitors, Merge Labs aligns with Sam Altman’s vision of human–machine convergence, leveraging OpenAI ventures connections and positioning itself as a Neuralink rival with an emphasis on higher data throughput and scalable AI-assisted interpretation. The company’s goal is to create seamless, high-bandwidth brain–computer communication that enhances human capabilities and enables new ways of interacting with technology.

What believers are saying

  • Butterfly's September 1, 2026 deal creates a commercial supply chain immediately.
  • OpenAI pledged scientific foundation models and frontier tools to accelerate Merge's R&D.
  • Ultrasound BCI leverages Butterfly's 71.4% gross margin platform and semiconductor manufacturing.

What critics are saying

  • A $252 million seed round funds research, not FDA-approved products or revenue.
  • Neuralink's implant-first progress and clinical visibility threaten Merge's noninvasive positioning.
  • OpenAI's insider support invites governance scrutiny if Merge misses milestones before 2027.

What makes Merge Labs unique

  • OpenAI invested in Merge Labs' $252 million seed round at an $850 million valuation.
  • Merge Labs uses ultrasound-on-chip from Butterfly Network, unlike Neuralink's invasive electrodes.
  • Sam Altman, OpenAI, and Forest Neurotech give Merge exceptional AI and neuroscience access.

Sam Altman-backed Merge Labs selects Butterfly Network as exclusive ultrasound chip supplier for brain interfaces

Merge Labs, a brain-interface startup backed by OpenAI and Sam Altman, has selected Butterfly Network as its exclusive ultrasound-on-chip supplier under a multiyear agreement. The deal includes upfront payments, development milestones, purchase commitments, access fees, and potential royalties, though specific amounts were not disclosed. Butterfly's semiconductor-based ultrasound architecture makes the system programmable and easier to embed in new devices. The company retained rights to license its technology to other partners. Butterfly's second-quarter revenue increased 39% to $32.6 million, with gross margin expanding to 71.4%. Adjusted EBITDA loss narrowed 78% to $1.4 million. Management raised full-year revenue guidance to $119 million to $123 million. Thirty-three hedge funds held Butterfly Network in the second quarter, up from 26 in the first quarter.
