Requirements
  • Minimum of two years’ experience or certification as a Surgical Technologist.
  • Surgical Technologist Certification through the certifying body of the Association of Surgical Technologists, Inc. preferred.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification or must successfully obtain within two (2) months of hire.
  • Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, a self-starter, possess critical thinking skills and be able to set priorities and function as part of a team as well as independently.
  • Commitment to working in a team environment and maintaining confidentiality as needed.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.
  • Possess and maintain computer skills to include working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn other software as needed.
Responsibilities
  • Arrange instruments for maximum efficiency during operative procedures and anticipate the surgeon’s needs.
  • Maintain the sterile field and follow aseptic techniques to uphold patient safety.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other specialists to deliver patient-centered care.
  • Set up and evaluate equipment to ensure everything is in top working condition.
  • Participate in counts and assist in the handling of surgical specimens.
  • Assist in patient transfer and post-operative care with professionalism and compassion.
  • Participate in planning process for surgical procedures and accurately select equipment and supplies for cases.
  • Provide care to the patient in the application of dressings and during transfer to the recovery area.
  • Provide support in maintaining sterile technique and recognizing and communicating equipment or supply issues.
  • Anticipate the surgeon’s needs and efficiently pass appropriate instrumentation, sutures and supplies to surgeons and/or assistants.
  • Assist as directed in cutting sutures and keeping track of items such as sponges and needles.
  • Assist with preparation and disposal of lab specimens and room cleaning as directed.
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance as scheduled by department leadership.
  • Train Surgical Technologist staff per department protocol.
  • Cover multiple areas as trained and per scope of practice.
  • Communicate issues in maintaining supply levels to appropriate stakeholder per department protocol.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders in maintaining and updating preference cards/pick lists.
  • Maintain knowledge of intra-operative medications and assist in their use as needed.
  • Complete additional work-related developments per department protocol.
  • Ensure coordination with Sterile Processing for instrument maintenance and repair.
  • Participate in counts before, during, and after procedures per department procedures.
  • Ensure safe environment by maintaining sterile field integrity during procedures.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certification through the Association of Surgical Technologists, Inc. preferred.
  • Surgical Technologist experience preferred in Dental, ENT, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, OB/GYN, Orthopedics, Pediatric Neurosurgery, Pediatrics, Plastics/Breasts, Podiatry, Robotics, Surgical Oncology, Thoracic, Urology, Vascular.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification preferred or must obtain within two months of hire as stated (already in requirements but included for completeness).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and adaptability to new software as needed (already in requirements).

Logan Health Shelby receives Cardiac Recognition Award. Logan Health Shelby was recognized recently with the Cardiac Recognition Award, which is sponsored by the Cardiovascular Health Program within the state health department. The Recognition Award singles out critical access hospitals who demonstrate that they have the infrastructure and commitment to provide high quality care for patients with acute coronary syndrome, which includes heart attack. Receiving the Cardiac Recognition confirms Logan Health Shelby has met high standards related to the utilization of evidence-based cardiac order-sets and protocols, provides laboratory services 24/7, has a well thought out transfer protocol and has administrative commitment to treating heart attack patients. This is the 14th year that the Cardiac Recognition Award was presented, and Logan Health Shelby is one of 20 Critical Access Hospitals to qualify for the award. Requirements for the recognition include tracking and reporting key cardiac outcomes, using outcomes data to initiate quality improvement activities and coordinating regular healthcare provider cardiac trainings. Heart disease is a leading cause of death in both Montana and the United States. Last year, over 3,000 Montanans died from the impact of heart disease.
