Requirements
  • Eight years of commercial lines underwriting experience handling large or complex accounts.
  • Knowledge of complex commercial lines underwriting policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of insurance law and underwriting and marketing principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of Standard Bureau Rating plans and catastrophe management concepts.
  • Knowledge of alternative rating methods and plans and pricing theory.
  • Knowledge of treaty and facultative reinsurance.
  • Knowledge of regulatory issues, the wholesale broker system, market conditions, and company operations.
  • Ability to work extended and non-standard hours based on project and customer deliverables.
  • Ability to travel as required.
Responsibilities
  • Research and develop new classes of business as directed, including researching market trends and competition, assessing market viability, creating forms and endorsements, and developing rates with actuarial support.
  • Partner with the Actuarial team to develop rates and pricing, the Finance team to review potential insureds' profitability profiles, and the Claims team to review self-insured retention viability and potential loss frequency and severity on large, complex accounts.
  • Review individual risks with assigned brokers and decline or accept business based on the information necessary to make the decision.
  • Analyze exposures to loss, develop adequate premium charges, determine endorsements and exclusions, and develop manuscript wording appropriate to each risk.
  • Place reinsurance for accounts within department guidelines.
  • Achieve team and individual production and loss ratio goals through broker management and marketing.
  • Analyze premium and loss results of assigned brokers by state and major classes of business and recommend corrective actions.
  • Oversee or handle policy maintenance items and other mid-term requests.
  • Review endorsement requests and authorize necessary policy changes.
  • Review Loss Control reports and recommendations and partner with brokers to ensure loss control compliance.
  • Follow up on outstanding information as required.
  • Review claim activity and take appropriate action.
  • Foster positive business relationships with brokers through frequent contact, develop rapport, and resolve broker conflicts.
  • Travel to broker offices as required for training or marketing visits.
  • Entertain brokers visiting the Company as required.
  • Assist with the development of marketing ideas and strategies for underwriting events and other marketing campaigns.
  • Use treaty, semiautomatic, and facultative reinsurance facilities appropriately and maintain working relationships with reinsurers.
  • Resolve highly complex technical questions.
  • Develop technical and business knowledge through internal and external venues.
  • Teach classes to build technical underwriting knowledge for brokers, SSU students, and other underwriters.
  • Mentor new and existing underwriting talent.
  • May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with wholesale broker distribution chain.
  • Experience with excess and surplus lines underwriting.
  • An undergraduate degree.
  • Completion of general insurance courses such as CPCU, CIC, AU, ARM, CPIW, CWIS, or ASLI.
