Requirements
  • An Associate Degree in biological science or chemistry is required.
  • Completion of a qualified medical laboratory science program or three years of acceptable clinical laboratory experience is required.
  • The Medical Laboratory Technician must meet personnel responsibilities under CLIA Section 493.1495.
  • The technician must participate in continuing education.
Responsibilities
  • Perform a full range of laboratory testing and report laboratory findings to physicians.
  • Follow procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Maintain records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Adhere to quality control policies and document quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
  • Follow established policies and procedures when test systems are not within acceptable performance levels.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting, correct them when possible, or immediately notify the technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director.
  • Document corrective actions when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Apply the principles, theory, and techniques of laboratory medicine to produce and report appropriate results.
  • Perform, interpret, and record quality control data in all departments.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on instrumentation as prescribed in procedures.
  • Produce and report laboratory results in microbiology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, automated chemistry, and serology.
  • Plate microbiology specimens.
  • Call critical results.
  • Perform inventory and maintain department supplies.
  • Complete other assigned tasks and projects.
Desired Qualifications
  • ASCP or AMT certification is preferred.
  • Two to four years of laboratory experience is preferred.
