Position Description

The McGill University Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Allergy, Clinical Immunology, and Dermatology in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position as an academic clinician or as a clinician-scientist at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidates’ qualifications and experience. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is one of McGill’s major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. All pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are represented at the MCH.

The Division of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology is composed of a clinically and academically outstanding group of eight allergist/immunologists and three associate members, with externally funded fundamental and clinical research portfolios, and expertise in quality improvement, patient safety and in transition of patients from pediatric to adult care. Strongly committed to multi-disciplinary care, the Division provides both outpatient and inpatient consultation to all areas of the hospital and covers the full range of conditions relevant to allergy and immunology. The Division has an active, fully accredited Royal College Pediatric Allergy and Clinical immunology Residency program, training 25 residents over the past decade. Members of the division are involved in diverse scholarly activities at the hospital and university as well as nationally and internationally.
 

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Pediatrics where they will be expected to be an active member of the Division of Allergy and Immunology at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH), McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). All members are expected to share equally in on call duties. Academic clinicians are expected to cover the inpatient 8-12 weeks per year and hold 2-3 half-day out-patient clinics per week. Clinician-scientists are expected to cover the inpatient 6-8 weeks per year and hold a minimum of one half-day out-patient clinic weekly. The incumbent will also be expected to participate in all clinical and administrative division meetings.

If appointed to a clinician-scientist position, the successful candidate will become a member of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), joining one of the eight active research programs at the RI-MUHC. Fundamental scientists are affiliated with the Centre for Translational Biology, while clinical scientists are affiliated with the Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation. Candidates interested in a clinician-scientist position will be expected to commit 50%-75% of their time to research.

Research and other academic activities are encouraged and supported. Supervision of undergraduate and graduate trainees and participation in the pediatric allergy and immunology subspecialty training program is expected. Physicians in the Division of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology are also expected to contribute to our interdisciplinary education mission, supporting the education and professional development of nurses and nurse practitioners.

Applicants for a clinician-scientist position will be expected to demonstrate the ability to independently initiate, conduct, and manage a research program and must present an outline of their planned research program and needs for start-up funding. Clinician-scientists are expected to devote 50-75% of their time to research and to apply for salary support from the FRQS. They are also expected to eventually obtain external operating grants for their research. The successful candidate will have access to research infrastructure available through the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre and the McGill University Department of Pediatrics.

The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., teaching, research, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees). They will provide excellent clinical teaching and supervision to diverse residents and medical students.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must:

• Hold an MD degree (or equivalent) as well as postgraduate clinical training in Pediatrics;
• Have completed specialty training in Pediatric Allergy and Immunology with certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);
• Applicants to a clinician-scientist position are expected to have a minimum of 2 years of dedicated research training; a postgraduate degree (e.g., MSc or PhD) will be considered an asset;
• Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
