Requirements
  • Associate’s degree in relevant field
  • Florida License for Histotechnology.

Responsibilities
  • Prepares tissue specimens for microscopic examinations and handles the more complex jobs involving immunohistochemistry for clinical patient diagnosis.
  • Maintains and reviews quality control in assigned laboratory facilities.
  • Determines the acceptability of testing results and instrument function.
  • Maintains all equipment and places orders for reagents and materials.
  • Maintains records of samples including sample accessioning and paraffin block and slide files.
  • Follows specimen handling and processing procedures.
  • Participates in the formulation and revision of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Provides guidance and leadership to employees within assigned section.
  • Makes recommendations for improvement of laboratory functions.
  • Handles clinical and patient concerns in a confidential manner employing integrity and discretion.
  • Identifies and resolves problems with equipment and specimen integrity.
  • Examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • Grossing/Histotech is responsible for the preparation of surgical specimens for Histologic processing.
  • The grosser will record by dictating trough a Dictaphone transcribed by Keystrokes, all measurements, volume, color, etc. as well as specifying how many cassettes were used for each part of case.
  • Always procuring QA, by inspecting and confirming two patient identifiers.
  • Describe gross anatomic features of routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens, ensuring that all lesions, markings, and sutures are mentioned.
  • Capable of grossing simple to moderate complex specimens under direct and indirect supervision, as applicable to training and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle broader range of specimens with indirect supervision (i.e., gall bladders, oriented skin lesions, etc.).
  • Escalates non-routine, complicated surgical specimens to Pathologist Assistants.
  • Record measurements, weight, volume, and any abnormal findings as applicable.
  • Dissect surgical specimens and prepare tissues for histologic processing.
  • May be trained to perform basic Histology functions (i.e., embedding, microtomy, routine and special stains and frozen sectioning) if personnel meet all requirements as outlined in corporate
