Explore Schools operates as a network of public charter schools in Brooklyn educating about 1,700 students. Its mission is to provide an excellent, college-preparatory education with a strong focus on equity, so all students have access and opportunities to succeed. How it works: schools deliver high-quality curriculum and instruction through rigorous academics, high expectations, and caring, committed adults, while actively engaging families and reflecting on systems of oppression to address the opportunity gap. The organization differentiates itself by explicitly tying equity to excellence, embedding equity and cultural sensitivity in practice, and prioritizing community involvement to close the Brooklyn opportunity gap. The overarching goal is to help students reach college readiness and success beyond high school by ensuring all students receive an excellent education and meaningful opportunities.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • The network reports 2025 outperformance across both ELA and math.
  • Governance stayed active through April 2026 board meetings and published annual reporting.
  • Central Brooklyn location supports sibling preference, waitlists, and stable neighborhood demand.

What critics are saying

  • NYC charter enrollment is capped, limiting growth beyond Brooklyn districts 17 and 18.
  • Building-sharing at 655 Parkside Avenue exposes operations to co-location politics and space constraints.
  • If academic gains slip, charter renewals and family demand weaken quickly.

What makes Explore Schools unique

  • Its 2025 results beat NYC by 5 points in ELA and 9 in math.
  • Two-year students outperformed peers by nearly 20 points in ELA and math.
