About the role

This role is a Staff Software Devops Engineer who will report to the VP of Engineering and will be responsible primarily for our system topology, scaling our datastores, and basically assisting all teams hosting environments.

What does the role look like?

As a Staff Software Devops Engineer, you will have significant responsibility over the overall stability and explosive growth our systems will have to support. You need to be highly capable of communicating with other engineers to complete your initiatives with quality and urgency. You are expected to spec and ticket projects, stay on top of releases, and deliver on time.

Staff Software Devops Engineers will focus on engineering related KPIs and seeing into the future, making sure that our systems can scale appropriately, and establishing solid engineering rigor across the maintenance of our systems.

This role is responsible for maintaining the infrastructure our systems run on. Currently, all our backend and database services are self-hosted. They are self-hosted on docker swarm containers running on AWS machines. In addition to these services, our databases and CI/CD are self hosted on EC2 machines. 

Here are some projects you might work on

• Launching new DB instances and services for other engineers
• Building a reliable CI pipeline for testing and deployments
• Deploying multi region backends to allow for international expansion
• Building auto scale systems to support high load
• Setting up rigorous monitoring and alerting for all of our systems
• Maintaining optimal database performance by fine tuning it and upgrading it if need be
• Support zero-downtime infrastructure migrations
• Improving local development environment for our engineers
• Auto scaling our Ruby on Rails Sidekiq background queues  (nice to have)
• Improving our data pipeline to ensure fast and reliable data movement between database services (nice to have)
• Moving our Vercel Next.js pipeline to being self-hosted (nice to have)
• Maintaining our file uploading service called Imgproxy  (nice to have)

Qualifications

• Linux operating systems, e.g. Debian, Ubuntu
• Very experienced in relational databases e.g. Postgres
• Very experienced in AWS
• Experienced in networking - security, VPC, firewalls, etc
• Experienced setting up monitoring and alerting
• Experienced automation and scripting e.g. Ansible and Terraform
• Experience in Docker and/or Kubernetes
• Experience with CI/CD

Nice to haves

• Experienced with Ruby / Rails or Python / Django
• Experience with Clickhouse DB
• Experience with Postgres DBA
• Experience with NextJS, Vercel, and Cloudflare Workers
• Experience with load testing
