Requirements
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in Property and Casualty Underwriting.
  • A bachelor's degree is required; related work experience may be considered.
  • Must meet minimum requirements for state Property and Casualty and/or surplus line licenses.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee and strategically manage workflows for new property and casualty business and renewals while adhering to underwriting guidelines.
  • Evaluate, prioritize, and select submissions; price risks that will develop an underwriting profit for the carrier; and refer or decline excessive risks.
  • Assess risks comprehensively, including coverage value, location, usage, safety features, and other relevant factors.
  • Determine coverage limits, insurance premiums, and policy terms based on risk assessments while actively managing complex property and casualty accounts.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions with brokers and identify cross-sell opportunities while complying with regulations and guidelines.
  • Develop strategic initiatives for new business opportunities, maximize retention of assigned portfolios, and contribute to business targets.
  • Manage internal and external relationships, develop long-term broker and agent relationships, expand the book of business, and operate within delegated authority limits.
  • Partner with underwriting teams to support communication and task coordination across the underwriting process.
  • Provide accurate premium forecasts and business plans, contribute to budgeting processes, and support performance targets.
  • Optimize underwriting processes, introduce new technologies, and align the department with organizational goals.
  • Deliver training for new underwriters on underwriting guidelines, processes, and systems.
  • Attend industry events and monitor property and casualty underwriting trends, emerging risks, and regulatory changes to adjust underwriting strategies.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Actuarial Science, or Business Administration is preferred.
  • Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter certification is preferred.
  • Certified Insurance Counselor certification is preferred.

Ryan Specialty has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Stewart Specialty Risk Underwriting Ltd. (SSRU), a Canadian managing general underwriter based in Toronto.
