Requirements
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in electrical, electronic, instrumentation, or controls engineering or equivalent is required.
  • At least 4 years of experience in electrical design, power-electronics design, project execution, engineering, procurement, and construction, industrial drives, control panels, or switchboards is required.
  • Knowledge of low-voltage and medium-voltage drives, transformers, ring main units, and power-plant control for solar and battery energy-storage applications is required.
  • Experience interpreting power-system design outputs, including single-line diagrams, low-voltage and medium-voltage protection and coordination, voltage-drop and voltage-dip calculations, load-flow and fault studies, transient-system and scenario analysis, harmonic calculations, medium-voltage and low-voltage power-system cabling, power-supply quality, and electromagnetic compatibility is required.
  • Software and hardware expertise in solar, energy storage, plant-level controls, validation and verification, systems integration, advanced controls, or related technologies is required.
  • Experience with GE Mark VIe products and GE Toolbox ST, Workstation ST, Cimplicity supervisory control and data acquisition software, P80i software, HDM, and Simulink is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform detailed engineering for low-voltage and medium-voltage drives, transformers, ring main units, switchgear, alternating-current/direct-current cables, and power-electronics equipment as part of the project execution team.
  • Perform electrical-system design and power-electronics product hardware design, including loss-budget calculations, earth and protection circuits, arc-flash calculations, and root-cause analysis.
  • Understand product and project specifications and realize requirements through calculations, modeling, and simulations.
  • Design systems and equipment to meet reliability, testing, manufacturability, material, and cost guidelines.
  • Prepare and validate design documents, including configurations, principles of operation, application guidelines, specifications, general-arrangement drawings, bills of materials, single-line diagrams, and schematic drawings.
  • Verify functional performance of inverter, transformer, and ring main unit equipment under specified operating conditions.
  • Support manufacturing with component installation, wire harnesses, cable routing, and maintenance of clearances and creepage distances at factory or vendor facilities.
  • Document functional test requirements and conduct testing according to applicable Underwriters Laboratories and International Electrotechnical Commission standards, including project factory acceptance tests.
  • Coordinate continuously with system engineers and program, product, and project managers during execution.
  • Manage project deliverables and coordinate with multiple stakeholders on detailed engineering, controls-software validation, commissioning support for solar, battery energy-storage systems, and hybrid plant-control systems, and inverter activities.

  • Experience with electrical-design and simulation tools such as AutoCAD, EPLAN, ETAP, and MATLAB is preferred.

GE Vernova secures $6M state funding for $96M energy research centre in Niskayuna

GE Vernova has secured an additional $6 million in state funding for its $96 million Advanced Research Center on Balltown Road in Niskayuna, New York. The grant, awarded through the FAST NY programme, will fund water supply, road and stormwater management upgrades at the campus, offsetting roughly half of the $12 million in required infrastructure improvements. The company previously received $9.6 million in state tax credits linked to plans for creating 75 new jobs at the research centre, along with low-cost hydropower allocation. The site, separate from GE Vernova's existing River Road labs, will house energy technology research including a direct air capture carbon system currently under testing. GE Vernova earned nearly $5 billion in 2025 on $38 billion in revenue, with a market value of $242 billion.

ThinkLabs raises $28M USD Series A to help power grids handle AI data centre demand

ThinkLabs has raised $28 million USD ($39 million CAD) in a Series A round led by Energy Impact Partners to help power grids manage surging demand from AI data centres. Nvidia's venture fund NVentures and Edison International participated, alongside returning investors including GE Vernova. The Canadian-led, New York-based startup provides physics-informed AI software that creates digital twins of power grids, simulating scenarios to help operators maintain reliability and reduce outages. The platform reduces what would typically be a six-month, quarter-million-dollar study to under a day's analysis. Founded by former Toronto Hydro smart-grid department head Josh Wong, ThinkLabs spun out of GE Vernova in early 2024 with $6.8 million CAD in seed funding. The company will use the new capital to mature its product and expand features whilst focusing on the North American market.

Trump and Japan unveil up to $40B US nuclear reactor plan

President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi have unveiled a US-Japan energy investment plan potentially worth $40 billion, centring on small modular nuclear reactors. GE Vernova and Hitachi will develop BWRX-300 reactors in Tennessee and Alabama, whilst Japan will invest up to $33 billion in natural gas plants in Pennsylvania and Texas. The initiative forms part of a broader $550 billion bilateral investment fund agreed under a recent trade pact. It aims to address rising electricity demand from data centres and artificial intelligence infrastructure. However, most SMR designs await regulatory approval and none have been deployed on US grids. The agreement also covers critical minerals and industrial supply chains, with Japanese firms contributing components and participating in rare-earth projects across Indiana, Arizona and North Carolina.
