Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Responsibilities
  • Provide patients with personal hygiene care, including bedpans, urinals, baths, backrubs, shampoos, shaves, and assistance with showers.
  • Assist with meals, feed patients, ambulate, turn and position patients, and provide fresh water and nourishment between meals.
  • Administer enemas, douches, non-sterile dressings, surgical preparations, ice packs, heat treatments, therapeutic and sitz baths, and restraints.
  • Perform sugar and acetone urine testing, specimen collection, and post-mortem care.
  • Respond promptly to patients’ call lights and requests.
  • Maintain a safe and attractive environment for patients and staff and transport patients and equipment.
  • Report patient conditions to the assigned nurse for professional assessment.
  • Measure and record food and liquid intake and output and check and record vital signs.
  • Help patients walk, exercise, and move in and out of bed.
  • Observe and report patients’ status and needs.
  • Obtain weights and vital signs and report results to the nursing team.
  • Obtain specimens from nursing staff and transport them to the laboratory or designated department.
  • Operate equipment safely.
  • Alert appropriate registered nurse team members when emergencies arise or patient status changes.
  • Gather equipment needed to control emergency patient-care situations.
  • Demonstrate age-specific competencies.
  • Participate in quality-improvement initiatives.
  • Retrieve patients from the waiting room and direct them to the appropriate clinic room.
  • Assist with patient transport to and from the department as needed.
  • Provide patient- and family-centered care and update families as needed.
  • Clean clinic rooms and patient-care-area equipment between patients as needed.
  • Perform clinical and clerical functions for the unit.
  • Perform unit secretarial duties, including faxing, copying, mailing, and typing essential materials.
  • Answer telephone calls promptly and courteously, using proper telephone etiquette, and route calls and messages appropriately.
  • Maintain chart organization according to established procedures.
  • Maintain the orderliness and accuracy of medical records in the electronic health record, including uploaded outside records.
  • Request results, laboratory records, and other patient-related records from outside offices.
  • Follow up with patients to ensure preoperative testing is completed according to the scheduled surgery date.
  • Contact surgical patients the day before surgery regarding scheduled arrival time and location.
  • Follow HIPAA standards.
  • Follow up with medical offices to ensure preoperative results are sent to the department in time for scheduled surgical procedures.
  • Communicate with registered nurses and advanced practice providers to ensure correct results and records are obtained, reviewed, and finalized promptly.
  • Review clinical records for completeness and identify missing laboratory results, electrocardiograms, X-rays, cardiac testing, and medical clearances.
  • Communicate with registered nurses, advanced practice providers, and the manager regarding missing reports.
  • Communicate concerns and changes to registered nurses, advanced practice providers, and the manager.
  • Deliver medical reports to registered nurses and advanced practice providers for review.
  • Access computer systems to obtain medical records, including UChart, LabCorp, and Quest.
  • Maintain effective communication with patients, physicians, registered nurses, advanced practice providers, and staff members.
  • Implement preventative measures for patients identified with safety risks, such as falls.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments and consultations and provide patients with appropriate information.
  • Assist with scheduling laboratory and clinic appointments as needed.
  • Retrieve or assist clinical personnel in retrieving diagnostic studies.
  • Retrieve and print next-day schedules.
  • Order supplies for the supply room as needed.
  • Keep the area stocked with necessary supplies and forms.
  • Maintain confidentiality of medical, financial, computer, and other sensitive materials.
  • Maintain clinical competency and active professional certifications and licensure.
  • Maintain documentation of continuing-education requirements.
  • Attend mandatory in-services and departmental meetings.
  • Support and participate in performance-improvement activities.
  • Seek and accept training to learn new skills and maintain current competencies.
  • Practice within the guidelines and scope of a certified nursing assistant.
  • Address customers courteously and by name.
  • Listen to patients and customers, demonstrate sensitivity, and keep them informed of progress.
  • Work effectively and cooperatively in groups and teams to ensure quality patient care.
  • Communicate effectively with the manager and interdisciplinary team.
  • Attempt to resolve patient, physician, and visitor complaints and refer unresolved issues to managers.
  • Report to work promptly when scheduled.
  • Serve as a mentor and role model.
