Requirements
  • Active certification as a Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Nationally Certified Medical Assistant, or Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant is required, subject to South Carolina certification restrictions.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required at hire for Roper St. Francis Healthcare locations and before independent patient care where applicable.
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • In South Carolina, completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program, an approved health sciences program, a military Medical Assisting program, a Department of Labor-approved Registered Apprenticeship program, or an aligned healthcare-employer training program is required.
  • For the alternate position, enrollment in an approved Medical Assistant program is required within 30 days of employment.
  • Candidates must maintain clinical and administrative skills according to departmental competency guidelines.
  • Candidates must demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills, medical terminology knowledge, attention to detail, multitasking ability, and the ability to use standard office equipment.
  • Candidates must complete required skills or competency checklists for assisting physicians with examinations and treatment.
  • Candidates must exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment, and learn infection-control policies.
Responsibilities
  • Provide indirect and direct patient care within the Medical Assisting scope of practice and applicable state guidelines.
  • Collect and document patient chief-complaint information, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, temperature, medical history, vital statistics, and test results.
  • Document patient and family needs and participate in planning and implementing patient care.
  • Administer ordered oral, injectable, and topical medications under provider direction.
  • Identify significant changes in patient condition through data collection and report them to the provider.
  • Troubleshoot issues and escalate problems to the provider, direct supervisor, or appropriate internal resource.
  • Room patients and prepare them for physician examinations.
  • Maintain clean, orderly, safe, and properly functioning work areas, examination rooms, equipment, supplies, and instruments.
  • Assist patients and providers with virtual health visits, including platform setup, pre-charting, patient preparation, troubleshooting, chief-complaint collection, health-maintenance checks, and medication review.
  • Accurately document information in electronic medical and health records and manage provider-directed in-basket messages.
  • Perform front-desk workflows such as MyChart requests, patient registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, and check-in/check-out.
  • Follow up on orders, appointments, referrals, laboratory and diagnostic tests, and follow-up visits; collect co-pays as needed.
  • Provide authorized prescription and drug-refill information to pharmacies as directed by the provider.
  • Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physician instructions to patients.
  • Collect, log, and prepare blood, tissue, and other laboratory specimens for testing; perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
  • Assist physicians during examinations and treatment by handing them instruments, giving injections, removing sutures, and changing wound dressings.
  • Perform general office duties, including answering telephones, taking dictation, and completing insurance forms.
  • Order supplies, track referrals, and perform other assigned job-related duties.
  • Travel to other facilities for providers or adjust work hours to meet patient-care needs as directed by the practice manager.
Desired Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program is preferred in all states except South Carolina.
  • Completion of externship or clinical lab training is preferred.
  • One year of recent Medical Assisting experience is preferred.

Steel work begins on $1.2B Roper St. Francis heathcare campus in South Carolina. * Posted on July 22, 2026 The Barton Malow | Edifice joint-venture team has begun structural steel work at Roper St. Francis Healthcare's future Roper Hospital campus in North Charleston, South Carolina, marking a pivotal milestone in the construction of the $1.2-billion facility. The start of steel work signals the project's transition from below-grade construction to its vertical rise, bringing the building's form to life on the 27-acre site. The new campus, designed by E4H Environments for Health Architecture (a MOREgroup Brand) and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, will deliver 805,000 square feet of advanced healthcare space for the Lowcountry community. The building will include 328 inpatient beds, a 47-bay emergency department, 44 critical care beds, 18 operating rooms, a comprehensive imaging department and a 12-bay hemodialysis unit. Completion is targeted for 2029. Barton Malow | Edifice is using a target-value delivery method, which allows the team to adapt design components while maintaining budget and schedule integrity. The approach has been instrumental in navigating site-specific challenges, including complex seismic conditions, FAA height restrictions and a high-water table.
