Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
  • Must have all appropriate state licensure, education, and training required by the state.
  • Must successfully complete the organization dialysis training program for continued employment.
  • Must successfully complete CPR certification for continued employment.
  • Must pass the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment, with reasonable accommodations considered.
  • Must perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting and moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, and lifting solutions up to 30 pounds frequently and 40 pounds occasionally.
  • Must travel between assigned facilities and various locations within the community, with possible travel to regional, business unit, and corporate meetings.
  • Must follow organization policies, procedures, systems, ethical business practices, and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Must demonstrate commitment to the organization's culture, values, and customer service standards.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines, including programming blood flow, dialysate flow, ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling as prescribed.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law, and monitor arterial and venous pressures during treatment.
  • Obtain and document pre-treatment, post-treatment, and intratreatment vital signs, weights, vascular access evaluations, treatment parameters, and patient responses.
  • Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide prescribed interventions, monitor patient responses, and report significant changes or unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Ensure appropriate machine safety alarms are enabled and perform required pretreatment alarm testing, including Pressure Holding testing.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory tests, collect and label specimens, prepare and store samples according to laboratory specifications, and arrange collection by the laboratory courier.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment by cleaning blood spills and disinfecting dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments.
  • Prepare, organize, and efficiently use supplies and equipment, including ordering and inventory for the Transitional Care Unit.
  • Enter treatment data accurately and promptly into the designated clinical application and complete hemodialysis treatment sheets, progress notes, charts, and laboratory requisitions.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness and ensure required nursing signatures and corrections are completed.
  • Prepare initial patient charts for admission and compile paperwork for chart placement.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities and infection control audits.
  • Support and reinforce infection control education and practices for patients, families, and staff under the direction of the nurse or designee.
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under registered nurse supervision.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff under nurse supervision.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care.
  • Reinforce education about disease processes, vascular access, treatment options, home dialysis products, and home dialysis benefits as allowed by state law.
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff members to support the patient experience and ensure disciplines are scheduled according to plan.
  • Set up and perform treatments on all machines used in the Transitional Care Unit.
  • Demonstrate peritoneal dialysis setup and assist with coordinating the patient's transition to the chosen dialysis modality.
