Manager – Outpatient Pharmacy

POSITION SUMMARY:

You will manage the daily operations of our Specialty Pharmacy at Children's National Hospital, ensuring compliance with state, federal, and departmental policies, and procedures. You will oversee all aspects of the pharmacy, including staff supervision, adherence to safe dispensing procedures, achievement of targeted goals, and compliance with laws and regulations. Your role involves maintaining quality improvement initiatives consistent with company standards, fostering a work environment where team members feel valued, heard, and respected. You will plan, organize, direct, and lead personnel to identify and implement new or improved processes. You will develop measurable metrics to drive quality improvement and enhance patient-focused services. With a detailed understanding of system design, reengineering, project management, quality improvement, outcomes measurement, and statistical analysis, you will skillfully utilize these techniques to optimize pharmacy operations and service delivery.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

• Establish and enforce best practice processes for safe prescription dispensing, ensuring compliance across the pharmacy department.
• Ensure adherence to state and federal pharmacy regulations, maintaining accreditation and safety standards.
• Supervise pharmacy staff, including pharmacists, technicians, and students, managing schedules and staffing ratios effectively.
• Collaborate with the Site Director on recruitment, orientation, training, and performance evaluations.
• Perform pharmacist duties, including prescription transcription, order entry, and patient consultation, within assigned schedule.
• Maintain accurate documentation and compliance with state/federal guidelines for handling narcotics and restricted drugs.
• Liaise with physicians and benefit providers to process prescriptions, identifying cost-saving opportunities and implementing improvements.
• Manage pharmacy inventory and ensure compliance with inventory regulations.
• Identify, develop, and analyze system/process performance, making recommendations for improvement and contributing to budgeting and procedural changes.
• Demonstrate leadership in achieving departmental goals, fostering a productive work environment, and resolving conflicts.
• Provide professional, confidential patient care, and uphold company and site performance standards.
• Participate in staff development activities and maintain professional competency through continued education.
• Ensure operational compliance with regulatory bodies and professional organizations.
• Communicate effectively in written and verbal forms, responding to complaints and conflicts promptly and effectively.
• Foster positive relationships with site leadership, clinical, and administrative staff, addressing partner hospital satisfaction promptly.

EDUCATION:

• A PharmD or bachelor's degree from a College of Pharmacy is required for this role.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

• An active Pharmacist licensure (in good standing) to practice pharmacy in the state in which you are applying in or and/or the ability to acquire this at the time of hire is required.
• Must possess or be able to obtain a State Board of Pharmacy Preceptor’s license by the current state you are applying to within one year of hire.

EXPERIENCE:

• 3+ years of previous experience in an outpatient/retail pharmacy setting
• 1+ years of related pharmacy supervisory/management experience as a Pharmacist in Charge is preferred

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

• Extensive knowledge of procedures, systems, and equipment used in retail pharmacy settings, coupled with adeptness in performing pharmacist duties, is essential for this role.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and personal management skills are required to oversee retail pharmacy operations effectively.
• Ability to evaluate current pharmacy services and procedures and implement improvements through an evaluative process.
• Professional demeanor and appearance are expected.
• Demonstrated expertise in medications, drug interactions, medical procedures, therapies, diagnoses, and disease states is essential.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills for effective communication with diverse stakeholders including hospital staff, patients, families, physicians, and colleagues.
• Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks, prioritize duties, and adhere to deadlines.
• Organized work approach with a proficiency in maintaining accurate documentation.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills; proficiency in additional languages is advantageous.
• Self-directed with strong self-management abilities; capable of identifying and addressing issues independently.
• Proven track record in process improvement and a keen eye for detail and precision.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook) and web browsers.

Special Working Conditions (On-call, travel, shift, coverage):

• Minimal travel required for this position.
• Clearway Health Specialty Pharmacies, serving patients in hospitals, health systems, and communities, may require employees at client sites to work on company-recognized holidays.
