Job Description
Basic Purpose
Positions in this job family provide assistance to teaching staff in standard academic or commercial subjects, and to students in daily classroom activities or daily living skills in a state school, hospital, facility or institution.
Typical Functions
Provides assistance to students in a group setting, or on an individual basis.
Assists teaching staff with special instructions, such as teaching Braille; supervises playground, gymnasium and extra-curricular activities.
Types and copies materials for daily activities; assists in arranging and distributing material to students; assists with the operation of equipment used in the classroom by teaching staff and students.
Provides physical assistance to students in moving from walkers or wheelchairs to classroom seating.
Assists with maintenance of records and reports of attendance, activities and grades.
Provides assistance to teaching staff in maintaining discipline and order in the classroom.
Assists with classroom clean-up.
Level Descriptor
This job family consists of only one level and employees are responsible for performing all functions involving assisting teachers and students in daily classroom activities and in daily living skills. In this role, they will provide assistance to teaching staff by supervising student activities, distributing learning material to students, and preparing absentee reports and grading routine test papers. They will also provide assistance to students in basic living skills, with daily work assignments and in setting up assisted-learning equipment required by students.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required include knowledge of reading, writing and arithmetic at a level sufficient to instruct primary school children; and of learning disabilities. Ability is required to maintain effective working relationships with others; to maintain discipline; to interact positively with children with disabilities; and to prepare instructional materials and aides.
Special Requirements
Some positions with the Department of Rehabilitation Services require proficiency in American Sign Language.
The Department of Rehabilitation Services has determined that some positions in this job family are safety sensitive as defined by 63 O.S. § 427.8.
Additional Job Description
Position is located at Oklahoma School for the Deaf (OSD) in Sulphur.
Essential Functions: Position will provide assistance to students in a group setting or on a one-on-one basis. Duties include assisting teaching staff with special instructions, supervising playground, extra-curricular activities, and chaperone on bus during home going trips and returning to school.
Applicant must be willing to perform all job-related travel.
Trial period (if applicable) is required.
Background Check: The Department of Rehabilitation Services will conduct a criminal background check on new hires as part of an offer of employment that is made contingent upon a successful criminal background check.
Preferred Qualifications: American Sign Language (ASL) skills.
