Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of experience in maintenance, pipefitting and/or welding trade and related equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Efficient skills and knowledge in using pipefitting and welding tools and equipment.
  • A basic understanding of plumbing code compliance.
  • Knowledge of piping components (i.e., types of valves, fittings, types of piping).
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Successful completion of probationary period.
  • Valid OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health card.
  • Ability to push and pull 70 pounds; climb and stand on ladders for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to read, understand and update blueprints, schematics and as built drawings.
  • Ability to read, understand and apply safety standards and practices (e.g., hazard communication, infection prevention, lock-out/tag-out).
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply technical manuals and systems specifications.
  • Ability to follow applicable trade-specific codes, standards and regulations.
  • Ability to learn technical skills and apply new knowledge to solve problems.
  • Ability to select and use hand, power and machine tools.
  • Ability to establish and maintain interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations including fractions, decimals and percentages; use algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles and load calculations for lifting and moving heavy objects.
  • Ability to locate, disable and enable electrical disconnects and plumbing shut-offs.
  • Ability to instruct others to perform tasks and provide guidance on technical systems or processes.
Responsibilities
  • Installs, repairs and maintains all welded piping systems and components.
  • Reviews blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Installs, repairs, replaces piping and components.
  • Measures and cuts pipes using hand and power tools.
  • Inspects and identifies leaks.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on piping and components (e.g., meters, valves, piping).
  • Troubleshoots and resolves piping system issues (e.g., pressure, temperature, leaks).
  • Performs equipment installations (e.g., fans, pumps, heat exchangers, trapping stations, valving and welded piping systems).
  • Addresses customer queries and cleans the work area after completion.
  • Ensures areas are in compliance with applicable codes; documents regulatory compliance tests.
  • Inspects and tests installations and repairs to ensure they meet quality standards.
  • Gains knowledge of equipment and utilities and transfers that knowledge to other staff.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves field problems; may assist lower-level technicians.
  • Locates, identifies, disables and enables local utility shut-offs.
  • Updates building drawings.
  • Participates on emergency response teams.
  • Documents labor, materials and work performed on work orders.
  • Submits material and equipment purchase requests and provides feedback on materials.
  • Creates estimates for small projects.
  • Informs customers when tasks are completed and escalates work orders when needed.
  • Participates in professional development activities and meetings; participates on emergency response teams; may participate on committees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Associates or technical degree or vocational certificate in a skilled trades or maintenance related field.
  • Boiler operator’s license (e.g., low pressure, high pressure).
  • Valid OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health card.
  • AWS Certified Welder certificate.
  • Boiler operator’s license (e.g., low pressure, high pressure).
  • Basic understanding of university building design standards related to the maintenance and repair of building systems and equipment; basic understanding of the project process as managed by Facilities Operations Design and Construction.
