Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Current licensure is required as specified by the state board where services will be provided: Maryland Pharmacy Technician License or Pharmacy Technician Student Permit; Ohio Certified or Registered Pharmacy Technician License or Trainee License; Pennsylvania Pharmacy Technician License or Pharmacy Technician Trainee License; or West Virginia Pharmacy Technician License or Trainee License.
  • Remote workers must additionally hold a pharmacy technician license or pharmacy technician trainee license issued by their state of residence.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare unit-dose medications, deliver medications, and order and deliver drug supplies.
  • Read physician orders and prescriptions and prepare medications for dispensing, including unique dosage forms for pediatric and geriatric patients.
  • Apply standard pharmaceutical and medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols used in prescribing and dispensing medications.
  • Communicate with patients or caregivers to determine medication, medication possession, and medication delivery, pickup, or shipment scheduling.
  • Prepare and deliver controlled substances accurately and maintain all necessary records.
  • Take inventory and analyze patient-care-area medication supplies, replace outdated or deteriorated medications, and replenish depleted inventory.
  • Prepare non-parenteral medications accurately, including oral solutions and suspensions for pediatric patients.
  • Label parenteral and prescription products appropriately.
  • Perform arithmetic calculations for dosage determinations required in medication and solution preparation.
  • Perform duties according to departmental speed and accuracy standards.
  • Prepare and label prepackaged medications after determining usage patterns and prepackaging requirements, and maintain related records.
  • Maintain inventory and supplies in assigned pharmacy service areas.
  • Answer telephone calls and route them to the appropriate individual.
  • Keep pharmacy service areas and drug storage areas clean and orderly.
  • Follow state and federal restrictions governing duties that may only be performed by pharmacists.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate degree, post-high-school education in a science field of study, or graduation from a pharmacy technician training program is preferred.
  • Six months of pharmacy technician experience is preferred.
