Requirements
  • A High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Experience working with disadvantaged children in childcare and/or recreational programs for children is required.
  • Certification in CPR, First Aid, and Fire Safety must be completed within three months of hire.
  • Good organizational, writing, and communication skills are required.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate recreation activities for children after school and when school is not in session.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate all youth and family programming.
  • Report to the Education Coordinator regarding youth and family recreation-related issues.
  • Coordinate field trips, program calendars, and holiday celebrations.
  • Work with local colleges and high schools to develop recreational opportunities for clients, including Big Buddy programs and student recreation.
  • Develop and maintain contacts with museums, theaters, sporting events, and other cultural programs and activities for clients.
  • Develop and facilitate recreation activities for adults within the facility, including homemaking, healthy eating, shopping on a budget, and empowerment activities.
  • Organize after-school programs, including basketball, soccer, baseball, and football leagues, on-site or in conjunction with community and school programs.
  • Plan monthly family meeting activities.
  • Plan and supervise a summer program for up to fifty children.
  • Recruit, orient, and supervise summer counselors.
  • Maintain a safe and structured environment.
  • Maintain up-to-date statistics and incident documentation.
  • Work shifts beginning as early as 8 a.m. and ending as late as 8 p.m., depending on program needs and scheduled activities.
  • Assume the same job position at another Salvation Army shelter at the discretion of the Director of Shelters or Salvation Army department heads.
  • Perform other assignments and tasks at the discretion of the Director of Shelters or Salvation Army department heads.
  • Maintain confidentiality of clients and shelter programs.
  • Perform duties independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • Interact positively and helpfully with clients, visitors, contract staff, volunteers, and coworkers.
  • Build a supportive work environment and maintain a positive workplace attitude.
  • Represent the shelter or program appropriately when dealing with the public and clients.
Desired Qualifications
  • A New York State driver's license is strongly preferred.
