- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with the public, city staff, and others.
- Ability to evaluate situations, identify problems, and exercise sound independent judgment within established guidelines.
- Drive along assigned routes and record water meter readings using electronic meter-reading equipment.
- Inspect meters for defects, abnormal usage, tampering, and unusual conditions.
- Report meter defects and meter conditions.
- Unblock and dig out buried meters; clean registers and meter boxes.
- Inspect water meter connections for leaks and replace washers on meter connections.
- Repair or replace faulty water meters, meter boxes, lids, stops, connections, and resetters.
- Check water service for leaks, measure water lost due to leaks, repair meter leaks, and remove and replace meters.
- Install meters on contractor taps and service lines.
- Turn water on for new customers and turn water off when directed.
- Respond on-site to customer inquiries, explain water service procedures, and answer questions about the meter-reading process.
- Prepare reports of completed work and follow up on repairs, installations, and customer concerns.
- Assist with other public works projects and perform related duties as required.
- Practice safety by avoiding dogs and other obstacles when entering unknown properties.
- Previous experience is helpful but not required.
