Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A state criminal background check and, if applicable, a federal criminal background check are required for regulated areas.
  • The ability to accurately use applicable computer software and equipment for access processing and follow downtime procedures is required.
  • Knowledge of procedures for reporting and documenting unsafe or hazardous conditions, incidents, and defective equipment in compliance with hospital policy is required.
  • Considerable attention to detail, organization, and the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously are required.
  • The ability to memorize substantial information and reference information not retained from written sources or from appropriate personnel is required.
  • Knowledge of medical insurance requirements for payment and basic knowledge of covered services are required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to understand written and verbal communication are required.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology is required.
  • Frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping are required.
  • Visual acuity within the normal range is required.
  • Manual dexterity to operate keyboards, fax machines, telephones, and other business equipment is required.
  • The ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods and read and comprehend information is required.
Responsibilities
  • Obtain demographic, billing, and insurance information from patients, family members, or legal guardians; enter it into registration and billing systems for service and claim processing; and scan insurance cards and photo identification.
  • Provide patients with information concerning insurance, bill payments, and hospital procedures.
  • Complete managed-care responsibilities, including obtaining precertification and authorizations, as needed.
  • Prepare standard consent forms, notices of privacy practices, and other registration paperwork; present documents for signatures; and obtain electronic signatures for consent to treat and patient financial obligations.
  • Collect deposits, copayments, deductibles, and patient-liability payments when applicable; provide receipts; and document payments in registration and billing systems.
  • Prepare patient-identification armbands.
  • Balance daily receipts and the cash drawer for patient payments as needed, and follow up on accounts indicated by system flags.
  • Initiate various screenings, obtain pertinent coverage information, and complete appropriate paperwork as needed.
  • Perform medical-necessity checks and complete Advanced Beneficiary Notices as needed.
  • Schedule, reschedule, or cancel patients in accordance with hospital workflows.
  • Check order completeness and validate orders against scheduled services.
  • Interact continually with patients, medical staff, and support staff in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
  • Work in an environment with potential exposure to communicable diseases.
