Purpose
The Dell Medical School (DMS) Director of Research and Education Finance provides leadership and direction for research and educational financial operations and strategy at DMS. This includes, but is not limited to, generating meaningful reporting and analytics, communicating results to drive strong financial decision making, and overseeing the integration of research and education financial data across multiple platforms. This position is highly matrixed between the Office of Finance, Office of Research, Office of Medical Education, Department Chairs and Senior Administration.
Responsibilities
Serve as a key leader and liaison for the Office of Finance leadership (Senior Director and CFO) in working with the Office of Research and the Office of Medical Education to create and execute a financial plan to support the strategic growth of the research enterprise. Act as partner with the Dell Medicine Office of Research and Office of Medical Education, providing thought leadership and analysis for ongoing business initiatives (go/no go decisions, scenario analysis, project after-action reviews, etc.).
Develop, maintain, and deliver financial reporting to Research and Education leadership teams, driving continuous improvement in budgeting, forecasting, and reporting. Develop metrics and analytics to monitor and assess performance to budget in volumes, revenues, and expenses. Create and lead a monthly financial review for each office. Develop rolling multi-year program level forecast, supporting research and education prioritization.
Partner with the Controller and Office of Research to assure the necessary control environment is in place to comply with Federal regulations, to appropriately recognize grant and contract revenue, assure that grant and contract accounts receivable are properly recorded with any necessary allowance for doubtful accounts. Coordinate with the Director of Finance, Controller, Chief Financial Officer, and the Compliance Office on all financial and compliance audits by regulatory, internal, external, and taxing authorities.
Represent the Director of Finance regarding research and educational financial matters on various institutional committees and ad hoc groups. Represent Finance to other operational components, UT System, outside agencies, and on intra- and inter-unit committees as needed. Collaborate with Finance leadership to ensure business continuity plans are maintained, documented, and routinely tested.
Work closely with the Finance leadership team on the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of finance staff supporting research and education finance. Work with Finance senior leadership to define, plan, and implement professional development of staff. Work closely with the Finance leadership to evaluate staffing levels and develop projections to meet operational needs. Adhere to internal controls and reporting structure.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in finance or a related field. 10 years of progressive, professional finance, accounting, or consulting experience, including 5 years of mid to senior management experience and including 5 years in an academic medical center or dynamic and complex healthcare organization or hospital system. Demonstrated leadership skills, including but not limited to, collaboration, communication, integrity, transparency, and execution. Must possess broad industry knowledge of academic health care. Strong knowledge of financial applications and processes. Effective problem-solving skills. Ability to develop, prioritize, and accomplish goals. Ability to analyze and evaluate data and make appropriate decisions/ recommendations. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a high degree of professionalism in dealing with staff at all levels of the institution.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in business administration or related field. 15 years of progressive, professional accounting or finance leadership or consulting experience, including 5 years of mid to senior management experience and including 5 years in an academic medical center or dynamic and complex healthcare organization or hospital system.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
