Requirements
- A high school diploma or GED and five years of experience performing basic sampling, monitoring, or research activities, compiling and collecting data, and preparing reports are required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration safety requirements and scientific methods is required.
Responsibilities
- Perform complex laboratory assignments by planning and conducting experiments of limited scope or portions of larger projects.
- Lead research activities and laboratory support tasks for lower-level technicians.
- Serve as the unit operations liaison to ensure compliance with departmental or University policies, procedures, and defined internal controls.
- Ensure accountability and stewardship of University operational, financial, and human resources in compliance with departmental standards and procedures.
- Use new and innovative research techniques, review literature, apply acquired knowledge to experimental questions, and help select and design tasks addressing scientific questions.
- Perform moderate to complex data analysis and calculations, interpret results, and make recommendations.
- Organize and manage data, conduct tests, and perform statistical analysis using statistical software.
- Organize technicians and coordinate experiments.
- Produce data tables and figures for research papers and presentations, and review draft material for content, organization, clarity, grammar, and style.
- Ensure written material is accessible to individuals with varying degrees of literacy.
- When serving as leader for testing hazardous or potentially hazardous substances, take primary responsibility for testing and maintaining personal protective equipment, devices, and equipment.
- Work with physical processes used to sample or measure environmental actions, including establishing grids, monitoring stack releases, and sampling hazardous materials.
- Provide technical oversight to lower-level research technicians.
- Coordinate the training and performance of lower-level technicians and students.
- Inspect completed work and ensure quality and compliance with standards and specifications.
- Determine needs, develop specifications, and select vendors and equipment for testing.
- Provide education on monitoring and sampling equipment.
- Train staff and identify technical training needs.
- Serve as the department representative for questions concerning testing, sampling, and monitoring methods and practices.
- Review and revise procedures and policies according to best research practices.
- Work with the Principal Investigator and other research staff to modify or develop procedures and policies.
- Prepare and monitor a laboratory budget with department administrators and centralized finance teams when assigned.
- Keep current with industry standards, best practices, and trends in health sciences.
- Attend and participate in weekly laboratory meetings, institutes, and seminars as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
- An Associate's degree in Health Science, Biology, Chemistry, or another science-related field of study is preferred.
