Requirements
  • Have 5–8 years of experience and be very strong in Python.
  • Have hands-on experience building and operating machine learning systems at scale in production, not only training models or running notebooks.
  • Know how to frame an ambiguous product problem, establish a baseline, and select useful metrics before optimizing a model.
  • Have strong experience in several of these areas: document artificial intelligence, natural language processing, classification, ranking, recommendation, anomaly detection, deep learning, or generative artificial intelligence.
  • Care about data quality, observability, failure modes, cost, and long-term maintainability as much as model performance.
  • Have a balanced blend of technical, business, and product skills, and communicate with software engineers, product managers, and non-technical domain experts.
  • Be fluent in English; French is not mandatory.
Responsibilities
  • Design and ship machine learning systems for document understanding, extraction, classification, matching, ranking, scoring, and recommendations.
  • Contribute directly to the Copilot and Autopilot experiences, including Bookkeeping Autopilot and Revision Autopilot.
  • Own the full lifecycle of solutions, including problem framing, data and labeling strategy, baselines, training, evaluation, deployment, experimentation, monitoring, and maintenance.
  • Turn user corrections and production failures into better datasets, models, and product behavior.
  • Define quality metrics that reflect real user value, including precision and recall, automation coverage, straight-through processing, human correction rate, latency, and cost.
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, and accounting experts to understand workflows, define correctness, and integrate machine learning into the user experience.
  • Choose the simplest reliable approach for each problem, including deterministic logic, classical machine learning, deep learning, or generative artificial intelligence.
  • Improve shared machine learning engineering practices, including reusable components, experimentation, observability, data quality, and reliable training and inference pipelines.
  • Monitor emerging machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques, including multimodal and generative models, and apply them when they create measurable value.
  • Own an Embedded AI use case end to end with clear offline and production metrics.
  • Ship meaningful improvements to Copilot or Autopilot capabilities.
  • Use real user feedback and error analysis to prioritize iterations.
  • Lead larger cross-team machine learning projects and help shape the Embedded AI roadmap.
  • Improve the reliability, automation coverage, and maintainability of production systems.
  • Share best practices and raise technical standards for machine learning engineering, evaluation, and production ownership.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with accounting, fintech, or other high-trust business workflows.
  • Experience with human-in-the-loop systems, active learning, or learning from user corrections.
  • Experience running machine learning systems at scale with strict latency, reliability, or cost constraints.
  • Familiarity with multimodal or generative models for document understanding.

Qonto and Pennylane: French fintech friends and foes vie for SME market dominance

Qonto and Pennylane, two Paris-based fintechs, operate as both partners and competitors in Europe's SME financial services market. Qonto, founded in 2016 and valued at $5 billion, serves over 600,000 customers across eight European countries with business banking, corporate cards and bookkeeping tools. Pennylane, founded in 2020 and valued at $4.25 billion, has over 800,000 customers using its all-in-one accounting and financial management platform. Whilst both companies integrate with each other's services, they increasingly compete for business. The rivalry will intensify as France introduces mandatory electronic invoicing for B2B transactions in September. Qonto is pursuing a French banking licence to offer lending products, whilst Pennylane recently raised $200 million to fund potential acquisitions. Qonto's managing director emphasises their different customer acquisition strategies, though both target traditional financial incumbents.
