Requirements
- A current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided or a current multi-state Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact.
- A current temporary Registered Nurse permit may be used where permitted by the applicable state board; permanent licensure must be obtained within the stated state-specific timeframe.
- A current temporary permit is not a multi-state license.
- Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of the hire date.
- The role requires the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-specific patient care and assess and interpret patient data relative to each patient's needs.
- The role requires the ability to lift, move, stoop, reach, stand, walk, and carry materials and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care within the ambulatory setting based on the nursing process and within the role and scope of practice.
- Perform preliminary patient assessments through observation and chart review to facilitate appropriate follow-up with the health care team.
- Evaluate unstable or complex patient-care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention.
- Implement appropriate clinical decisions and use expert peers or management when applicable.
- Accept accountability and use independent nursing judgment for care provided by self and by health care providers to whom care is delegated.
- Apply standards of care, use resources effectively, and evaluate patient responses in the delivery of patient care.
- Use standards of care and standards of practice to guide care delivery.
- Base decisions and actions on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings; seek assistance or credible resources when unable to perform safely and independently.
- Determine and revise priorities for direct and indirect patient-care activities based on patient acuity and available resources, and update the daily care plan with appropriate algorithms for safe patient handling.
- Use established patient-care support systems, including documentation, communication, and information systems.
- Provide educational instruction to patients and families with health-care needs.
- Identify patients' teaching and learning needs.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of patient and family teaching and document it in patient charts.
- Assist in orienting new employees according to the unit orientation plan.
- Apply information gained from educational experiences when providing patient care and instruction.
- Assume responsibility for the development of others.
- Engage in mentoring and networking activities to promote professional development.
- Foster the integration of staff and students into the health-care team and facilitate incorporation of the unit's mission, values, and vision.
- Demonstrate skill in managing conflict situations.
- Promote trusting relationships and open, honest communication at the unit level.
- Exchange information relevant to the specific patient assignment.
- Interact with members of the health-care team to meet patient-care needs.
- Participate in performance-improvement activities as appropriate.
- Use lift equipment and other patient-handling aids as indicated by the patient's profile and applicable algorithms.
- Work closely with others, around biohazards and infectious diseases, with hands in water, and around electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
- Cover multiple clinic locations when required, with some travel.
Desired Qualifications
- A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is preferred.
- An Associate of Science in Nursing degree or diploma is acceptable when the employee is currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and completes the Bachelor of Science in Nursing within five years of hire.
