Requirements
  • Strong triage and prioritization skills, with the ability to rapidly assess and determine the appropriate level of care.
  • Problem-solving expertise with a creative, patient-centered approach.
  • Ability to provide condition-specific patient education and self-management guidance.
  • Adaptability to varying team cultures and processes.
  • Empathy, compassion, and approachability in patient and team interactions.
  • Active Registered Nurse license through a Nurse Licensure Compact state and willingness to obtain licensure in non-compact states.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Associate degree in Nursing.
  • At least 3 years of Emergency Room experience.
  • Experience working with populations facing challenges such as serious mental illness, behavioral health conditions, and/or substance use disorders.
  • Care management and coordination experience.
Responsibilities
  • Manage inbound clinical issues from firsthand staff and patients via phone; triage appropriately and escalate emergencies immediately.
  • Work closely with peer mental health workers, social workers, and advanced practice providers to address acute issues comprehensively.
  • Coordinate care with patients’ other providers to ensure seamless health management.
  • Develop and deliver training on basic medical topics for peer mental health workers and social workers.
Desired Qualifications
  • Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Certification.
  • Washington state Registered Nurse license.

firsthand raises $10M of $32M round after staff cuts following UnitedHealthcare contract loss

firsthand, a New York-based serious mental illness care provider, has secured $10 million of a planned $32 million funding round, according to public filings. The raise follows significant setbacks for the company, which was forced to cut most of its staff in March 2025 after losing a major Medicaid contract through UnitedHealthcare. Founded in 2021, firsthand uses a peer support model where individuals with lived experience of serious mental illness engage with patients at home. The company previously raised $28.1 million in its Series B from GV in February 2023. The new funding signals renewed growth momentum. firsthand has established a partnership with Carelon focusing on total cost of care for serious mental illness patients. To date, the company has raised approximately $52.9 million across three funding rounds.
