Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support or HeartSaver First Aid within 30 days of hire.
  • Prior patient care experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrate competency in the use of Safe Patient Handling equipment.
  • Have strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Manage simultaneous multiple demands.
  • Have good time management skills.
  • Be able to lift, move, stoop, reach, stand, and walk while handling materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and pushing or pulling carts weighing up to 200 pounds.
  • Use lift equipment and appropriate patient-handling aids for transfers, lifts, and repositioning as indicated by the patient's profile and applicable algorithms.
  • Be able to sit, walk, or stand for prolonged periods.
Responsibilities
  • Perform direct and indirect patient care activities under the supervision of a registered professional nurse.
  • Perform delegated tasks to support high-quality, cost-effective care and a family-centered experience.
  • Provide basic physical care to promote patient comfort as directed by the registered nurse.
  • Assist assigned patients with activities of daily living, including making assigned beds.
  • Safely transport patients to tests and procedures and escort patients for discharge according to the Safe Patient Handling Policy.
  • Transport specimens and items throughout the facility.
  • Perform assigned tests, including glucose monitoring and urine and stool testing, and maintain quality-control testing and logs according to department policy. Certified nursing assistants on the Subacute Unit may not perform glucose monitoring.
  • Perform routine phlebotomy services, excluding line draws, in departments determined by management.
  • Obtain and record patient temperatures, pulse rates, respiratory rates, blood pressures, intake and outputs, weights, and abdominal girths according to departmental policy.
  • Set up equipment needed for oxygen administration to provide respiratory support.
  • Encourage use of an incentive spirometer according to Respiratory Care procedure.
  • Observe patients and immediately report concerns or changes in condition to a registered nurse.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to departmental procedure.
  • Assist physicians and registered nurses with examinations and procedures.
  • Assist with basic rehabilitation and physical therapy activities, including active and passive range of motion and ambulation.
  • Communicate with the registered nurse about nutrition issues, including poor appetite or lack of understanding of diet changes.
  • Provide total care within scope of practice, including vital signs and activities of daily living, when assigned sitter or constant-visual responsibilities.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment to help prevent or control infections and protect patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Maintain assigned unit equipment according to departmental procedures.
  • Report equipment repairs to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
  • Assist with routine unit operations as directed or needed to support communication and unit functioning.
  • Answer the telephone promptly and courteously, identifying self and unit.
  • Answer patient call bells and relay messages to appropriate personnel.
  • Relay accurate telephone, visitor, and patient messages to appropriate persons in a timely manner.
  • Complete requested errands promptly.
  • Transport non-controlled medications when requested by a licensed care provider, within the limited medication access permitted for unlicensed assistive personnel.
  • Remove out-of-date items.
