Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) preferred, but not strictly required.
  • Hospital experience preferred.
  • Medical terminology a plus.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read with comprehension, write legibly, and perform basic arithmetic.
  • Understanding and knowledge of patient care which may be delegated to nursing assistants.
  • Must have Tennessee State Nurse Aide certification for Certified Nursing Assistant; CPR/BLS certification required or to be certified/recertified during orientation period.
  • CPR is required for Nurse Assistant Non-Certified; ability to obtain or recertify during orientation period.
  • Ability to provide safe, efficient, competent care and meet unit-specific competency.
  • Must be capable of providing age-specific care and demonstrate competency in unit functions.
Responsibilities
  • Take and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, height, and intake-output measurements.
  • Encourage patients to turn, cough, and deep breathe; instruct use of incentive spirometry as per Plan of Care.
  • Ambulate and assist with mobility, transfer to wheelchairs and transportation as needed.
  • Attend to nutritional needs including distributing meals, feeding, providing water, etc.
  • Provide morning or evening care including bed bath, oral hygiene, grooming, dressing, changing linens, cleaning surfaces, organizing room, etc.
  • Empty drains, canisters, urine bags, bedpans and emesis basins; record intake and output.
  • Maintain a safe environment; report equipment issues; proper linen handling and supply storage.
  • Provide general care such as positioning, lifting or turning patients; assist with bedpan, urinal, or commode; preoperative care; abdominal binder or anti-embolism stocking application/removal.
  • Empty and clean ostomy bag per procedure.
  • Collect urine, stool, and sputum specimens as ordered.
  • Perform tasks such as range of motion exercises and assist with ambulatory devices as prescribed.
  • Possibly perform phlebotomy (requires additional training) including labeling with two patient identifiers and proper supply maintenance.
  • Possibly perform electrocardiogram (requires special training).
  • Answer patient call lights promptly and respond to requests.
  • Report significant changes in patient condition to RN.
  • Maintain clean and orderly patient and work environment.
  • Follow infection control policies and safety standards; use standard precautions and OSHA guidelines; proper body mechanics.
  • Document and maintain patient record as appropriate.
  • Prepare oxygen equipment setup and ensure proper connection and placement; check equipment functioning at bedside; ambulate patients with oxygen.
  • Set up suction equipment and verify proper function.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of age-specific needs and competencies for patient population; perform skills required for position.
  • Follow policies, procedures, safety standards; complete required education annually; participate in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • HEALTH/SAFETY/COMPETENCE: Cannot pose a direct threat to health or safety of self or others; demonstrate competency on unit-specific functions.
