Valmet delivers automation system for CO[2] liquefaction plant supporting green transition in Finland.

Valmet delivers automation system for CO[2] liquefaction plant supporting green transition in Finland. Valmet has received an order from Suomen Biovoima Oy to deliver a Valmet DNAe distributed control system (DCS) for a carbon dioxide (CO[2]) liquefaction plant at Auris Energia's biogas plant in Mäntsälä, Finland. It will be the first CO[2] liquefaction plant of its kind built in Finland with this technology. The project marks a concrete step forward in the green transition, enabling carbon capture and utilization directly at a biogas plant. At Auris Energia's plant, CO[2] is generated as a byproduct of biogas production. Instead of releasing CO[2] into the atmosphere, Suomen Biovoima's technology will capture, purify and liquefy it for reuse in industrial applications such as concrete production, where the CO[2] is permanently bound into the building materials. By turning emissions into valuable raw material, the solution supports circular economy and helps reduce the carbon footprint of energy production. "This project is an important step for us in developing more advanced and sustainable biogas and biomethane solutions. By capturing and utilizing CO[2], we can turn emissions into a valuable product while improving overall efficiency. Collaboration with Valmet allows us to bring modern automation into our solutions and scale these innovations in future projects," says Mikko Bengts, Sales Manager at Suomen Biovoima Oy. Valmet will deliver a Valmet DNAe Distributed Control System to Suomen Biovoima Oy for a CO[2] liquefaction plant being built at Auris Energia's biogas facility in Mäntsälä, Finland. Unlocking resource efficiency through automation. Valmet's automation solution helps Suomen Biovoima and plant owner and operator Auris Energia to strengthen resource efficiency, bringing one of the cornerstones of Valmet's strategy to life at the customer site. With advanced process control and real-time visibility, the Valmet DNAe system enables more efficient use of energy, raw materials, and human resources. Automated controls reduce the need for manual intervention, and a high level of security enables unmanned operations of the plant. The system also improves reporting and transparency, helping operators optimize performance and ensure consistent product quality. "In this project, we provide a cybersecure, modern, and robust Valmet DNAe system, while Suomen Biovoima brings their unique process know-how. Together, we create real added value to Auris Energia's biogas plant. This solution will enable secure data transfer, monitoring and reporting of the plant status and KPIs to Auris Energia. We look forward to developing this concept together with Suomen Biovoima. This project is a great example of how automation can support both sustainability and business performance," says Matti Miinalainen, Senior Sales Manager, Automation business area, Valmet. Long-term value through lifecycle thinking. The solution is designed with a long lifecycle in mind. Valmet supports customers beyond the initial delivery with continuous services, system development, and upgrades, keeping the plant efficient and competitive over time. This lifecycle approach helps customers adapt to changing requirements, improve performance continuously, and maximize the return on their investment. The delivery will take place in phases, with the main system delivery scheduled for November 2026. Installation is planned for December 2026, and startup is expected in the first quarter of 2027. The order is included in Valmet's orders received during the second quarter of 2026. The value of the order will not be disclosed.

Valmet launches IQ Virtual Sensor, enabling real-time strength optimization and unlocking significant fiber and starch saving.

Valmet launches IQ Virtual Sensor, enabling real-time strength optimization and unlocking significant fiber and starch saving. Valmet introduces Valmet IQ Virtual Sensor, a software-based solution that gives paper and board producers real-time visibility of critical end-product strength properties that have traditionally been measured only in the laboratory. By providing continuous quality predictions, the solution enables mills to maintain consistent quality, reduce fiber and starch costs, decrease energy consumption, and increase overall production efficiency. By delivering minute-by-minute predictions of key paper properties, such as tensile and tear strength, burst and short-span compression test (SCT), using the mill's existing data, the system provides operators with real-time visibility into product quality. Continuously learning from laboratory feedback, it enables proactive process optimization, reduces waste, helps prevent quality deviations, and ultimately improves mill profitability. "To avoid rejected batches, operators frequently build in large safety margins, resulting in increased use of costly raw materials and higher production costs. With Valmet IQ Virtual Sensor, operators no longer need to wait for laboratory results to understand how their actions will affect end-product quality. In addition, its built-in "what if" simulator lets operators test adjustments and see predicted impacts before applying changes to real production. By reducing uncertainty and enabling lower safety margins, the solution demonstrates how optimized process control helps unlock resource efficiency," says Timo Aro, Business Manager, Quality Management System, Automation Solutions, Valmet. Actionable insights from instant quality predictions Valmet IQ Virtual Sensor delivers real-time quality predictions during processing without the need for additional sensors or production downtime. All calculations run locally, without cloud dependency, ensuring secure data handling and fast response times. Seamlessly integrated with Valmet DNA and Valmet DNAe, the solution is highly intuitive, allowing operators to view predicted strength properties alongside other quality data from scanners. Empowered with continuous insight, operators can make faster decisions and improve production efficiency. Enhanced optimization with integrated control Valmet IQ Virtual Sensor is part of the Valmet IQ Quality Management Systems family, backed by more than 30 years of industry-leading expertise and continuous innovation in quality control for paper and board production. Although available as a standalone solution, Valmet IQ Virtual Sensor delivers unmatched quality management when combined with the Valmet IQ Quality Control System (QCS). Together, they provide mills with a holistic quality overview across the entire machine and even tighter control of essential quality parameters - all in one unified interface. In addition, IQ Virtual Sensor is future-proof and can be expanded to automated closed-loop controls with Valmet Advanced Process Controls (APC), enabling the next level of quality performance, process optimization, and profitability.
