Requirements
  • Three or more years of relevant experience.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, engineering, or robotics, or relevant experience and demonstrated skill.
  • Experience integrating software on hardware systems, including sensors, effectors, and compute platforms.
  • Strong programming skills in C and C++.
  • Experience with vehicle networks and diagnostics, including CAN, CAN-FD, Ethernet, FlexRay, UDS, and J1939, and with logging and trace tools.
  • Core software engineering skills in software design, unit testing, and debugging.
  • Ability to consistently deliver production-quality software in a continuously integrated environment.
  • Strong understanding of algorithms, data structures, and software design principles.
  • Ability to produce clean, maintainable code and documentation.
  • Experience working in teams and willingness to proactively solve problems.
Responsibilities
  • Integrate and deploy payloads on customer-bound hardware platforms and validate them in real-world conditions.
  • Work across the organization and directly with end users to deliver new behaviors, payload integrations, and emerging mission use cases.
  • Take a holistic view of autonomous vehicle behavior, including sensing, compute, controls, and other subsystem interactions, and drive overall performance improvements.
  • Analyze test results, identify issues and root causes, and collaborate with engineering teams to drive problems to resolution.
  • Partner across business development and engineering teams to translate customer requirements into delivered autonomy capabilities.
  • Travel 10–25% or 25–50% depending on candidate preference and role placement, and commute to Arlington, Virginia as needed.

  • Experience working with open architectures such as IOP, MOSA, SOSA, and FACE.
  • Experience with safety-critical systems such as MIL-STD-882, ISO 26262, and DO-178.

  • Experience with state machines and motion or path planning.
  • Experience with issue tracking using JIRA.
  • Knowledge of navigation, mapping algorithms, and robot perception.
  • Familiarity with real-time operating systems and embedded programming.

US autonomous ground vehicles see combat in Ukraine after 9-month deployment

Forterra has deployed over 100 autonomous ATVs in Ukraine for the past nine months, marking what the company believes is the largest deployment of autonomous ground vehicles in combat by a US defence tech company. The gas-powered Lancer vehicles, based on Polaris ATVs, can carry 750 kilograms of cargo and have driven more than 2,500 miles across 1,100 missions, completing 52 casualty evacuations. Ukrainian forces primarily teleoperate the vehicles rather than using full autonomy, as the technology cannot yet identify and respond to enemy threats independently. Forterra, which has raised over $500 million from investors including XYZ Venture Capital and Moore Strategic Partners, is working to combine traditional autonomous vehicle algorithms with generative AI. Ukrainian soldiers have requested cheaper versions to account for battlefield attrition whilst maintaining deployment flexibility.

Forterra unveils MESA autonomous vehicle for last-mile battlefield operations

Forterra has unveiled MESA, a modular autonomous vehicle platform designed for last-tactical-mile operations. Built on a factory-modified Polaris Ranger XD 1500, the vehicle integrates Forterra's AutoDrive® and Vektor mission modules to deliver mobility, computing, communications and sensing capabilities. The MESA platform features a flat deck design with 2,000 pounds of payload capacity, enabling rapid reconfiguration for mission-specific requirements. The system provides autonomous navigation in GPS-denied environments whilst maintaining secure connectivity across distributed forces. Forterra's autonomy technology has been proven in real-world operations including the USMC ROGUE Fires programme and various SOCOM initiatives. The vehicle is manufactured directly with Polaris, with modifications executed alongside the original equipment manufacturer to ensure platform integration without aftermarket chassis changes.
