Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A state criminal background check and, if applicable, a federal criminal background check are required for regulated areas.
  • The employee must accurately use applicable computer software and equipment for access processing and follow downtime procedures.
  • The employee must know how to report and document unsafe or hazardous conditions, incidents, and defective equipment in compliance with hospital policy.
  • The employee must maintain considerable attention to detail, stay organized, and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • The employee must be able to memorize considerable amounts of information and reference information not retained from written sources or from appropriate personnel.
  • The employee must understand medical insurance requirements for payment and have basic knowledge of covered services.
  • The employee must have written and verbal communication skills and understand written and verbal communication.
  • The employee must have basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  • The employee must be able to perform frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping.
  • Visual acuity must be within the normal range.
  • The employee must have manual dexterity to operate keyboards, fax machines, telephones, and other business equipment.
  • The employee must be able to sit and/or stand for extended periods and read and comprehend information.
Responsibilities
  • Obtain demographic, billing, and insurance information from patients, families, or legal guardians; enter it into registration and billing systems; and scan insurance cards and photo identification.
  • Provide patients with information about insurance, bill payments, and hospital procedures.
  • Complete managed-care responsibilities, including obtaining pre-certification and authorizations, as needed.
  • Prepare standard consent forms, notices of privacy practices, and other registration paperwork; present them for signatures; and obtain electronic signatures for consent to treat and patient financial obligations.
  • Collect deposits, co-payments, deductibles, and patient-liability payments when applicable; provide receipts; and document payments in registration and billing systems.
  • Prepare patient-identification armbands.
  • Balance daily receipts and the cash drawer for patient payments as needed, and follow up on accounts identified by system flags.
  • Initiate various screenings, obtain pertinent coverage information, and complete appropriate paperwork as needed.
  • Perform medical-necessity checks and complete Advanced Beneficiary Notices as needed.
  • Schedule, reschedule, or cancel patients according to hospital workflows.
  • Check orders for completeness and validate orders against scheduled services.
