Requirements
- Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
- National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certification Centers.
- Licensure, or eligibility for licensure, as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.
- Bachelor’s Degree as a Physician Assistant, or Master’s Degree as a Physician Assistant, is required.
- Graduation from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant approved Physician Assistant training program is required.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
- Licensure, or eligibility for licensure, by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine is required.
- Proficiency with computers is required.
- Strong communication skills are required.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for cardiology/electrophysiology patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization and immediate post-discharge ambulatory care.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, and pre-procedure evaluations.
- Participate in electrophysiology conduction studies, including management and monitoring of implantable devices.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with cardiology/electrophysiology faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient evaluation findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Develop individualized plans of care, including patient teaching, discharge planning, ongoing monitoring of implantable devices, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
- Care for patients across the age continuum within the scope of educational experience and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex cardiology/electrophysiology situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate cardiology/electrophysiology patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures.
- Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making to identify, evaluate, and manage individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
- Use teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
- Promote an environment that facilitates learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for cardiology/electrophysiology patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel within the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate within the area of expertise.
- Document each patient’s plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the medical record according to approved hospital policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in cardiology/electrophysiology practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate creative problem-solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to cardiology/electrophysiology patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review and interpret cardiology/electrophysiology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist cardiology/electrophysiology faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, stand, walk, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- Work closely with others, work protracted or irregular hours, work around biohazards and infectious diseases, work with or near deceased individuals, work with hands in water, and work near electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Desired Qualifications
- Cardiology, electrophysiology, or acute-care experience is preferred.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
- Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification is preferred; Family Nurse Practitioners will be considered.
- A Master’s-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
