Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent GED is required.
  • At least 2 years of related work experience is required.
  • A Certified Phlebotomy Technician certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology is required.
  • A valid driver's license and clean driving record are required, with annual driver record checks.
  • The role requires competency in patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, accessioning, processing, and specimen acceptability criteria.
  • The role requires communication, computer literacy, interpersonal communication, laboratory services, phlebotomy, and preceptor skills.
  • The employee must be able to carry or lift 15 pounds.
  • Initial and annual competency assessment through the Learning Management System is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  • Collect and procure blood and human specimens in clinical and nonclinical settings.
  • Identify patients, collect and label specimens, accession specimens, and process specimens.
  • Determine specimen acceptability and rejection criteria.
  • Work independently and accountably in assigned care areas while escalating issues to laboratory leadership as appropriate.
  • Follow supplemental safety protocols at non-Geisinger facilities.
  • Use relevant Geisinger business applications and tools as an autonomous end user.
  • Collect specimens in acute, post-acute, clinic, and field service areas as needed.
  • Mentor students and new employees.
  • Manage inventory as directed by the site or regional lead.
  • Foster collaborative patient care through effective communication, sound judgment, and team accountability.
  • Assist with continuous improvement objectives, including root cause analyses and other investigative processes.
  • Maintain the assigned fleet vehicle according to fleet maintenance policies and preventative maintenance schedules.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience as a nursing assistant, certified nursing assistant, medical assistant, certified medical assistant, or similar will be considered.
  • Military experience as a U.S. Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman, Aerospace Medical Technician 4N0X1, or related medical specialty will be considered.
  • Graduation from Geisinger's School of Phlebotomy Program may qualify for Phlebotomist II.
  • ASCP certification and completion of the internal preceptor course qualify for Phlebotomist III.
