Cast film die built for pfas-free formulations.

Cast film die built for pfas-free formulations. Amid the push to ban "forever chemicals," Nordson has engineered a new flow-distribution channel to enable stable extrusion of formulations without fluoropolymer-based processing aids. Editorial Director, Plastics Technology Nordson Extrusion Dies LLC has developed a new cast film die that it says enables processors to run formulations containing no fluoropolymer-based per- and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) process aids. The die is engineered around Nordson's patented Multiflow 10 distribution channel, which generates sufficient wall shear stress to promote surface renewal without PFAS-based polymer process aids (PPAs), while also reducing overall pressure drop and polymer residence time, according to Sam Iuliano, chief technologist at Nordson. As Iuliano explains, cast film processors by and large rely on general-purpose extrusion dies to process a variety of materials at a wide range of throughput rates. For formulations containing fluoropolymer-based PPAs, many of these dies have nickel-based internal surface plating to prevent polymer plate-out and associated optical film defects. Environmental concerns over PFAS-based PPAs, however, are driving material suppliers to develop formulations free of these "forever chemicals." Iuliano says many conventional dies are not up to the task of stably running these PFAS-free formulations, so Nordson developed a "hardware solution" to the problem.
