Requirements
  • The candidate must be well versed in California workers compensation statute claims.
  • The candidate must have a college degree, Bachelor of Arts degree, or equivalent experience.
  • The candidate must have at least 3 years of experience handling workers compensation claims.
  • The candidate must have strong organizational skills.
  • The candidate must have good time management skills.
  • The candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • The candidate must have a strong aptitude for and knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and the ability to quickly learn new programs.
  • The candidate must abide by departmental policies and procedures, including authority levels, to comply with risk management controls.
Responsibilities
  • The claims specialist examines claims data and conducts investigations into routine and moderately complex claims to determine coverage, compensability, subrogation, and benefits under moderate supervisory direction.
  • The claims specialist adjusts and manages claims within the limit of assigned authority.
  • The claims specialist receives lost-time and complex medical-only assignments, verifies and determines applicability of coverage, and initiates 24-hour contact with the employer and employee and 48-hour contact with the attending physician.
  • The claims specialist handles catastrophic claims with supervisory oversight.
  • The claims specialist conducts telephone investigations as required by the company claims-handling manual and procedures.
  • The claims specialist evaluates and adjusts claims within the limits of authority.
  • The claims specialist consults with the Claim Manager on claims where assistance and consultation is needed.
  • The claims specialist makes assignments to nurse case management when indicated and monitors their billing and performance.
  • The claims specialist sets reserves for anticipated exposure up to authority limits.
  • The claims specialist completes mandatory Reserve Worksheets and establishes reserves requiring complex analysis with lifetime pharmacy and cost inflation.
  • The claims specialist coordinates return to work and sets target dates.
  • The claims specialist maintains diaries at intervals of no more than three months.
  • The claims specialist documents files in the claims system.
  • The claims specialist reviews medical bills for causal relationship and appropriateness of charges and approves payments.
  • The claims specialist adheres to special account handling instructions.
  • The claims specialist attends account meetings by telephone and in person.
  • The claims specialist manages litigation on the files.
Desired Qualifications
  • Foreign language communications is a plus.
  • Equivalent experience may substitute for a college degree.
