Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Uber, Lucid, and Nuro target Houston robo-taxis in 2027 and San Francisco in 2026.
  • Reuters said Uber committed nearly $500 million, valuing Nuro at $6 billion.
  • California testing, Bay Area employee rides, and Munich expansion show accelerating commercialization.

What critics are saying

  • Uber’s paid-driverless launch still needs DMV deployment and CPUC ride-hailing permits.
  • Nuro abandoned delivery hardware, so revenue depends on partner vehicles and launch schedules.
  • If Uber or Lucid slip past 2026, Nuro becomes a costly R&D shell.

What makes Nuro unique

  • Nuro’s Nuro Driver targets robotaxis, personally owned cars, and logistics from one platform.
  • It won California DMV driverless testing and CPUC pilot permits in 2026.
  • Germany and Japan expansions prove it sells a universal autonomy stack, not delivery bots.

The company aims to expand the programme to dozens of cities in coming years. Uber and Nuro's combined fleet of 100 autonomous vehicles is currently testing in Houston with safety operators. Nuro has been testing Lucid Gravity SUVs equipped with its self-driving system in San Francisco, though vehicles remain driver-operated despite receiving a permit for driverless operation. Uber has established a 50,000-square-foot depot and charging facility in Houston as its operations hub. The company has invested approximately $500 million in Nuro and committed $500 million to Lucid, with plans to purchase at least 35,000 robotaxi-ready vehicles.
