- Be a registered Alberta welder apprentice from first through fourth year, or be eligible and willing to register.
- Have completed welding school or a pre-employment welding program, or have hands-on shop experience.
- Have the basic ability to run a bead and follow direction from a journeyman.
- Currently reside in Red Deer or the immediate area and have reliable transportation to the shop.
- Be able to pass a pre-employment alcohol and drug test and meet site safety requirements.
- Be physically able to stand, lift, and work in various positions through a full shift.
- Tack, fit, and weld structural steel and plate under journeyman supervision.
- Build hands-on time with Flux-Cored Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG), and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (stick) processes on carbon steel.
- Prepare material by measuring, laying out, grinding, bevelling, and cleaning joints for weld-out.
- Learn to read shop drawings, weld symbols, and fabrication specifications.
- Operate grinders, plasma and oxy-fuel cutting equipment, and assist with overhead crane picks.
- Complete pre-shift equipment checks, hazard assessments, and safety documentation.
- Keep the work area, tooling, and bays clean, organized, and production-ready.
- Have a second-year apprenticeship or higher.
- Have experience reading shop drawings and blueprints.
- Hold forklift, overhead crane, or rigging tickets.
- Hold current fall protection, First Aid, or other safety tickets.
