Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate is required.
  • Must meet Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services timeline.
  • Must meet all appropriate state licensure, education, and training requirements.
  • Must demonstrate commitment to the organization's culture, values, and customer service standards.
  • Continued employment is dependent on successful completion of the organization's dialysis training program and successful completion of cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
  • Must pass the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment, subject to consideration of reasonable accommodations.
  • Must be able to perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, and occasional pushing or pulling of equipment.
  • Must be able to travel between assigned facilities and various locations within the community; travel to regional, business unit, and corporate meetings may be required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy as part of the dialysis health care team under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse and in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, training, and applicable regulations.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines and maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  • Assist health care team members in providing patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures, disease processes, and vascular access.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or permitted by state law.
  • Obtain pre-treatment and post-treatment vital signs and weights and perform vascular access evaluations.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders, including blood flow and dialysate flow.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide prescribed interventions; monitor patients' responses to dialysis therapy.
  • Perform treatment discontinuation, reinfusion, venous-access evaluation, hemostasis, dressing application, and patient discharge evaluation according to established procedures.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling as prescribed.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled and conduct required dialysis machine alarm testing, including Pressure Holding Test.
  • Record accurate and timely vital signs, treatment parameters, patient treatment information, and interventions in the hemodialysis treatment sheet and applicable progress notes.
  • Report significant information, changes in patient condition, and unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Observe patients and conduct machine safety checks according to facility policy.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory tests and collect, label, prepare, store, and arrange courier collection of laboratory specimens.
  • Clean blood spills immediately with appropriate disinfectant and clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments.
  • Prepare, organize, and efficiently use supplies and equipment; assist with supply ordering and inventory for the Transitional Care Unit.
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient-care staff on appropriate programs under nurse supervision.
  • Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics and follow organizational business, ethical, and infection-control policies and procedures.
  • Complete and document participation in Continuous Quality Improvement activities and enter treatment data into the designated clinical application.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness, verify nursing signatures, correct omissions through appropriate staff, and prepare initial patient charts and related paperwork.
  • Collect information for infection-control audits and reinforce infection-control education and practices for patients, families, and staff under appropriate direction.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate their transitional dialysis care.
  • Reinforce education and care information for new patients and help patients understand home dialysis products, benefits, and treatment options.
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff members to support the patient experience and ensure disciplines are scheduled according to plan.
  • Set up and perform treatments on all machines used in the Transitional Care Unit, demonstrate peritoneal dialysis setup, and assist patients in understanding treatment options.
  • Assist with coordination of the transition to the patient's chosen dialysis modality.

  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or a related facility is preferred.
